I saw FGTH at the awesome Trevor Horn Concert some years back.

If you have't already, watch and enjoy loud:

Saw them last summer at a festival although as Holly Johnson as I think Trevor Horn owns FGTH trademark. Although I liked them back in the day I wondered why they were headlining vs more "household" names but when I heard Holly Johnson belt out hits and commentary realised just how good he was/is.

Mmmm, 1980s... 15-25 for me, so all the usual stuff, except the bands I was into - Eat, Wall of Voodoo, Lords of the New Church, Screaming Blue Messiahs, Alien Sex Fiend, Thrashing Doves, Love and Rockets... anyone else remember them? And how about... one of the best tracks from one of the best albums of that decade

Dad telling me at 15 I had to pay for everything myself except food and basic clothing.

Marched me down to the local co-op where he'd got me a part time job as a shelf stacker/ general minion for £19 a week.

    Totally backfired on him.

Within 3months I was head hunted by the local Presto. They then got into a tug o war with Woolies . Woolies had slightly better treatment but Presto was more money.

I spent pretty much all my earnings on clubbing and boozing.

By 16 I had a bar tab in all the popular pubs in town. I was a regular at the local clubbing scene within a 30mile radius. Including the 21 and overs. Bouncers all knew me. Most of them knew I was 16 . Quite a few of the bar staff and managers I socialised with outside of club time.

My social circle usually consisted of people 10 years older than me. I had entanglements with women up to double my age.

My Dad suspected nothing. One day he opened a suit case found underneath my bed. It was overflowing with porno mags , decanted vodka and gin , pirated vhs tapes , a flick knife and an air pistol. Also £800 in cash.

To supplement my hedonistic lifestyle I had started selling porno , booze and pirated vhs to my school chums. The knife and gun I'd taken in trade for some Razzles and Knaves.

I used the school AV kit to pirate the vhs tapes. Some of the teachers were my best customers.

The porn was a perfect business model. I'd charge £5 for a mag. If they brought it back to me I'd give them a quid off a new one then I'd offload the returned one to another kid for another £5. Rinse and repeat until the mags were literally falling apart.

Managed to maintain my straight A exam record so basically no one at the school bothered me.

I have fond memories of walking straight into a night club being greeted warmly by the bouncers and let in. Right past a bunch of the well healed popular kids from my school who were chancing their arm trying to get in.

    It was awesome the 80s.

On the one hand I despised the 80's as I watched my friends die one by one with AIDS, from contaminated factor 8.... and wondered if I might be next..I was 21 in 1983 when it all hit..

On the other hand I loved the 80's as I'd passed my motorbike test, and bought the fastest bike I could get my hands on.

80’s the best decade for me so far. Started a boy left a man. So many memories.
1980- first proper bike - Raleigh Grifter
1984 – Watching Spurs win the UEFA Cup in the Shelf
1986 - Started work in in the City
    1988 – first car – 1974 Triumph Spitfire 1500

    Gigs I went to;
    Bowie
    Jackson
    Madonna
    The Police
    Prince
    Duran Duran (with my girlfriend!)
    Simple Minds
    Prefab Sprout
    Then Jerico
    Stone Roses

    Mum and Dad still around

I've probably spent 2/3 of my life in and around Manchester, so I'm probably a bit biased, but I think it's fair to say that Manchester punched well above it's weight musically for most of the 80s and 90s.

From Joy Division/New Order through The Smiths, James, The Happy Mondays, The Stone Roses to Oasis, Manchester was pretty much where it was at. That's before you include the numerous peripheral bands like The Fall (marmite imo, but occasionally brilliant), The Chameleons, Inspiral Carpets etc, plus all the clubs. We had people like Tony Wilson (marmite as well) driving a lot of it.

Good days to be teens/20s in Manchester!

Ironically the city itself was pretty run-down in that era. Now it's largely regenerated, but lost a little of its soul/edge. (Maybe that died with Mr Anthony H Wilson).

    My decade.
High School, College, girls, job, car, more girls, more cars, money, flat, one more girl, a wedding and then a house.

The Jam, Wembley `83 I think. Beat Surrender, their last tour. I wished I was 10 years older so that I could of been there in `77.

My boss gave me a mobile telephone which was a massive status symbol and made me feel important.

It was the size of a building brick.

Discovering music, pubs, girls, an occasional toke.
I was already well grounded in 60's and 70's rock having older siblings but adding Tangerine Dream, Propaganda, Ultravox, The Cult, The Mission, Bhundu Boys, James Taylor Quartet, Housemartins, The Pogues, Funkadelic, Black Uhuru, Big Audio Dynamite plus many others to my tastes.
Best bands seen in that era: Pink Floyd, Bhundu Boys, The Pogues, Big Audio Dynamite, JTQ, The Gargoyles, Redskins, S E Rogie, Real Sounds, The Mission, and the worst by a mile- Christian Death. Still the only gig i've ever walked out on.

Three sisters (two were twins!) who shall remain nameless, but who one by one fell to my charms, briefly in two cases, longer term with one. And i got on well with their dad! I don't think he realised i'd had knowledge of the other two before hooking up with one of the twins for a longer term relationship though.

Hair! i had 4 ft hair from about '88...wish i could grow it now.
Nightclubs - Spiders and Silhouette in Hull.
Not dying when the butchers van i was laid in the back of travelling from Beverley to Spiders ended up upside down filling with water in a ditch as the driver took a corner way too fast - meat hooks in the ceiling et al, how me and the other kid laid in the back didn't get impaled i'll never know. Walking from the wreck into Dunswell and ringing a cab from the phone box and carrying on to the club! My first Pangalactic Gargle Blaster that night went down very fast i can tell you.......and omg....they still serve them!!!!

I know those are nightclub prices, but certainly for much of the 80s a pint was a quid or less (hence "beer tokens"- but I do remember pound-notes), and I remember uni halls charging 40p a pint even in the late 80s.

(Seeing myself falling into the same trap as my forefathers, of not really accepting the concept of inflation).

I slightly missed the point on that one! Incredible.

I do remember "triples for quid" though - that never ended well.

Recollections of the 1980's - starts here

I remember watching the Davis-Taylor world snooker final from my bed in Batley General Hospital after the only motorcycle accident that ever left me in hospital.

I recovered in time for the final year of my degree course.

Followed that with a three month tour of Europe in a VW camper van before starting work.

    Marathon
Quattro (the luminous green "fruit" drink of choice!)
    AstroWars
Home disco lights in your bedroom.
The Top 40 was a key highlight of the week, and everyone was interested. And you recorded it at home, editing out the DJ.

But it got me thinking, as my formative years were the 80's decade, along with many here, why not reminisce a bit?

Anything 80's related goes - what were your fondest memories, or perhaps the ones you've tried to forget?

I'll kick off with I was into CBM 64 games piracy in a pretty big way. And had well over three or four thousand games for the machine - swapped nationally and internationally, and never for financial gain.

I also loved Adam and the Ants for starters. Still got them on the iPod.
    Just found this thread :)

5000+ games on the C64, Bruce Lee and International Karate II being two of my all time favorites.

Adam and the Ants album as well, although I was more into synthy stuff like Tangerine Dream (still am actually) and Patrick O'hearn.

Big time FM pirate, mostly to do distances, but sometimes a bit of music and requests for the ladies we encountered in the swimming pool in summer and who listened to us being silly on air until late in the night sometimes eightplexing (is that actually a word?) away. Tubes were the way to go, ECC85, EL95 and as an end stage the QQE0312 I believe.................

    Daddel.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!

Early 80's got divorced and bought a luxury flat. Work was great... company cars etc. Suddenly females were plentiful ... what a time! Then I met a beautiful French girl (half Italian) teaching here ..shacked up with her.. South of France 3 times a year... car laid on and the best of everything.. by her wealthy parents. Her Dad was high up in the French Navy so we had the use of the Officers facilities in Toulon.
    Lasted through to 1993.

    Great decade for me.

1980-82: Living in a village near Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Remember cycling to Abingdon with my brother on Saturdays to spend pocket money on sweets and Airfix kits. Listening to the Top 40, Hooked on Classics, The Specials. Watched Knight Rider, BJ and the Bear, Blake's 7. Recall the Falklands War and British Leyland strikes. My dad's BL company cars: Austin Princess, Rover SD1s (he started with a 3500 and consistently got smaller-engined versions culminating in a 2000) then a Metro which all the management were encouraged to drive to help drive brand and demand. I coveted an Ingersoll 7013 digital watch in Woolworths and received it for Christmas. We then moved to the Midlands with dad's job.

1982-85: Solihull became the new stomping ground. Getting the bus there and to Tudor Grange swimming pool, taking the train to Birmingham with school mates. Friday night discos at the youth club. Stephen 'Tin Tin' Duffy, Ultravox (first gig) at the NEC, Madness, Simple Minds (met them at Virgin Mega Store in Birmingham). Wore burgundy-coloured stay-press trousers and a bubble jacket. Ingersoll was replaced with a Casio AQ222 Ana-Digi. Got a BBC Model B computer for Christmas one year. Played Elite, Repton and Chuckie Egg.

1985-87: Sixth Form College. Cycling to college on my Raleigh Winner bike toting my Head sports bag. Played a lot of tennis, wore a lot of Adidas tennis (Ivan Lendl) and sports wear (still do!), Campri ski jackets and Hi-Tec trainers. Proper blockbuster movies like The Karate Kid, Top Gun etc. Watched Commando on VHS over and over again at my mate's house. Discovered beer. Went clubbing in Birmingham: Edwards No 8, Pagoda Palace, The Dome - wearing a flecked suit and tie to get in. Saturday job in local Tesco pricing items and stacking shelves. Graduated to the deli counter. Drank too much whisky celebrating end of A Levels. Threw up waiting for taxi. Still can't stand the smell of whisky now. Bought a Pulsar Y128 quartz watch (still have it). Failed A Levels. Passed driving test in a Nissan Sunny hatchback. Bought an Amstrad hifi with cash from summer job. Was hopeless with girls.

1987-88: Retook A Levels. Did better this time. Being (mostly) hopeless with girls. Bought a Citizen diver's watch and put an aftermarket Jubilee bracelet on it. Bought some Ray Ban aviator sunglasses. Thought I was the dog's b0ll0cks. Headed off to Uni.

1988+ University. Moving up north, living in halls, learning to cook and budget. Drinking a lot of good ale. Struggling into lectures hung over from the night before. Staying up all night singing along to Queen's Greatest hits. Dance music hadn't quite hit it big yet so dancing in the Student Union to proper music. Love life improved. Drank so much on NYE 1988 that I fell over on the way home and bashed my face up quite a bit. Draught Boddington's Bitter at the local pub for under a £1 a pint. Theakston's Ale in the SU was 65p.
