It's both. Some people do more of one than the other . I much prefer to see pictures of weird or inexpensive watches than expensive ones for lots of reasons.
When posting pictures of your wares online what are your intentions? I find it difficult to differentiate between the motivation of having pride in what I own and sharing it with others and the 'look what I've got' smug feeling. Maybe one goes with the other. Feeling philosophical today.....

Surely it's just sharing something you enjoy with others, who have a shared interest and may enjoy it too? What would be gained by showing off to people you've mostly never met in real life? On the contrary, a forum such as this allows you to discuss your collection with like minded people, where you might not with friends who aren't interested in watches, and might actually take it as 'look at my expensive new watch'. You would hope this would be the one place where you could be open about this particular vice without being judged!
I guess there is such a thing as a 'rich kids of Instagram' culture online, people showing off their bling in exchange for likes, self-aggrandisement, and social media fame, and there can be actual rewards from that these days. But surely this little corner of the internet is too small for that kind of behaviour and the participants are hardly a bunch of 20-somethings who would buy into all that.
Personally I just enjoy looking at pictures of interesting watches as you can't own them all, and I'm glad there are people here who contribute to that, and for that reason I'm happy to join in and make the odd contribution myself. And it also makes a good photographic challenge - watches are so bloody hard to photograph, I'm not surprised people would want to share a successful picture.
What a dull watch forum it would be without pictures...
It varies from person to person I think. Generally it seems to be just shared enthusiasm. I did see someone post a picture recently, with the price tag 'casually' showing....

I don't really see there's anything to be had by your question to be honest. Firstly this is a watch forum and people always want to see pictures of watches that posters talk about. Secondly I don't think most people even consider analysing people's motives for posting, it is what it is, read the post and take it for what it is, or don't read it. Thirdly maybe you should pop over to another forum where people post pictures of their watch in their cars - a 50k watch in a Ferrari, you might have a point there. Even then I'd rather see the picture than not
My motivation is really simple, oh look, I took pretty picture of my watch, hmm, there are 2 choices, chasing missus to show her the photo (while she is running away or conveniently finds something else to do when I start approaching her with the mobile in hand), or post to the watch forum where people can appreciate the watch itself or the picture composition.
I don't think posting photos of a nice watch on a watch forum is bragging per say. You get the occasional 'loads a money' types who post their Rolex in a Best Watch for under a Grand' thread but that's not too common. End of the day, we're all on here as we have a similar interest so letting people see what you've got should not be frowned upon.
Bragging on a forum is a bit pointless, as it's fairly anonymous. I find picture on forums generally improve the enjoyment.
Facebook pictures on the other hand of expensive items tend to be bragging rather than pride
I for one love seeing what other people have, even if a lot are far more expensive than I'll ever be able to afford.
Its not something that concerns me. I like to look a pictures of watches, even those that aren't to my personal taste or relatively low budget.
My firm intent was to brag but I couldn't lift my safe full of milsubs in to the light tent. Thought about some arty photos of my Pateks next to my piles of gold, but there was no specialist medical subforum. Hence I mainly post pictures of cheap old Seikos now. Even though I can assure you all that I'm extraordinarily wealthy and stylish, and my skirting boards beyond reproach.
Both, and I don't think as watch forum guys we should feel any guilt on our part. In the real world, I cannot talk about my love of watches to non watch friends and family. So this space is a place to share our deep enthusiasm for this hobby. 😀

Common interest - why else?
When you look long into an abyss, the abyss looks long into you.........
Strange question for a watch forum.
Its a watch forum.
Also, bragging is pointless becsuse out of the thousands of members here theres only one whos collection cant be beaten.
For each and every one of us theres someone who has more. Thats a great equaliser so just enjoy what you have and enjoy learning about what you like-dislike-covet-would modify-etc from othet folks images. Dont overthink it.
Definitely not bragging on here. People are sharing images of watches which other members appreciate. It's pretty much the point of this place.
Posting unsolicited images of expensive watches etc on Facebook, however, that's a bit braggy.
I'm generally a bit of a jealous bitter guy who will have something to say about someone posting pictures of a £5k watch for example. But on here it's different. I actually feel pleased for someone who's posting pictures of the Patek they've just got their hands on.
I enjoy seeing what people have as it serves as an inspiration for something I may want to have in the future. If people post for bragging rights, go ahead! :D
As others have said, it is a strange question for a watch forum. It is neither pride nor bragging - it is a common interest and as they say, a picture tells a thousand words.
I was moaned at the other week for not showing pics.
Ive never once thought that people are bragging.
Maybe I'm incorrect but I've always assumed that many people on the forum have very very expensive watches that they bought years ago when watches were more affordable that they've now locked up in a safe or deposit box somewhere and the pics being shown are people's wearable pieces.
I really enjoy looking at watches and especially reading about the stories behind them.
If anything looking at such pics has made me really want, appreciate and respect one of the more accessible brands, Seiko, which prior to joining the forum would not have been the case.

Definitely not bragging, at least not on this forum. To give an example on TRF there are threads running -your hand on steering wheel with a pointed reference to some expensive car, IIRC there was also a thread your car/watch in front of your house or something like that. These I felt were bragging, maybe I'm wrong. I rarely post pictures, when I do it is to share the joy of a new watch or pen amongst people I know will enjoy the pictures as much as I. As some said either sharing here or running after SWMBO who has no interest or finding someone who appreciates a PP as much as a Vostok. The day it starts to feel like bragging or a competition will be a sad day for TZUK. Photos do brighten up the forum and a picture speaks a thousand words and all that...........
I disagree that there's only one collection that can't be beaten, there is no best collection.
Certainly there's a most expensive but there's also a highest number, a most desirable (probably one for each member), a most unusual etc.
That's the great thing about watches, there's so much variety and without pictures we wouldn't get to see that variety, we wouldn't get to see different people's views on what makes a great collection or what is important to them horoligicaly.
We also wouldn't get to see the great photography skills of Jocke or Tony which never fail to impress.
I don't think its bragging, but a picture on its own is a bit 'meh' .
I would much rather see a picture of a Vostok with enthusiastic text than just a picture of ' this weeks new Rolex'.
Any collection can be beaten, because everyone's idea of a perfect collection (does that even exist?) is different. Pictures help people like me especially. If you say oh I got a new 165932 I won't have a clue what you're on about. Show me a picture and voila, I see it!
It does help if there's a bit of artistry in the photo I suppose. Which there is a lot on here.
If it wasn't for piccies on watch forums I would not have purchased half of my watches.
Many have been bought "blind" due to cracking pictures
The bleedin' obvious of course, but this.
If you're not interested in watches, don't come on a watch forum
I enjoy looking at watches here, both expensive and cheap, new and old, wonderful and horrible!
I find the more esoteric watches more interesting, because you can only see so many Omegas Speedmasters, Rolex Subs, Seiko MM300s and PP Nautiluses, but I wouldn't discourage anyone from posting photos of their watch.
In short, it's neither pride nor bragging, it's sharing an interest...

Often, these pics are accompanied by interesting stories. For me it's also a lot of interest in history. Speedy on the moon, the Bulova vs Omega race, the -now rare and expensive- watches of Cousteau and the sometimes strange turns of times: not everybody loves Gerald Genta's designs, but with Patek he struck gold. On the other side of the spectrum Seiko's cheap-to-by-but-oh-so-popular SKX-range!
There are lots of watches I am unable to buy. It's like the days when I was young when I spotted a Jag E-type on the street for the first time: a dream, something out of reach. But still magnificent to look at! (I remember exactly where I spotted it - I can still point the location).
Menno
To me it is simply sharing - as others said there are plenty here with far more and far less so in my mind is really not worth worrying about.
I've never really noticed anyone on here bragging as such. I think the key strength of the forum is that people just like to share experiences and knowledge of watches regardless.
I do think that five years or so ago there was greater variety, and more interest in lower value interesting watches, whereas many watch forrums as they mature tend to become a bit Rolex obsessed.
So, no, no real bragging here.
Anyone want a link to my youtube video of me smashing up new DeepSea's with a hammer while laughing at poor people?

So clever my foot fell off.
I think the OP got the reaction he wanted myself.
People taking an interest and posting their opinions!
I actually harken back to the early days of watch fora when digital cameras were unheard of and Jocke did a pictorial of how to take watch pics with a scanner!
I was thrilled when my first scanner pic of an IWC was posted together with blurred moving second hand!
Fact is, there was far more watch discussion in the past because of the pictorial impediment. It made fora so much more interesting than just a pic of somebodies latest acquisition and very little else.
Cheers,
Neil.
It's pride over bragging.
Posting an image of your new expensive watch to your old colleuges and class mates via Solcial media is bragging.
Here it's pride, as there's no point bragging to a load of people you've never met, most of whom have far more expensive stuff in their watch box.
