One for the Space/NASA fans. I just backed my first Kickstarter project...

I saw this and instantly wanted it. A replica of the Apollo 11 flight plan!

    https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...-plan-re-issue

Don't blame me if it doesn't go ahead, but at around £60, I thought it's worth a shot!

    Very cool, thanks for sharing.

It says it will be funded

  3. #3
If, like me, you're kinda interested in the content but not too bothered about owning a replica (albeit it sounds like it will be very high quality), the entire flight plan is available here:

It's just not the same though. Nice to have something tangible and not digital :-)

Very cool and unique, I really like that!

Shame NASA didn't do it first. They could probably do with the funding...

I'm surprised Omega haven't thought of this either.

Thanks for the link, just signed up!

I was 12 at the time and followed it avidly, my eyes glued to the reports in the newspapers I was delivering on my paper round! I still have an original flight chart/info souvenir pack that I bought prior to lift off, it included a model spaceship which I moved along the course as the flight progressed, the flight plan will go nicely with this and my Speedy Pro.

I have all the PDFs of these (they're freely available online) for free, and loads of other Apollo era technical stuff and press releases all on pds / jpeg type files - obviously you'd have to print and bind it yourself should you wish to have it presented that way.

They're basically scanned copies of the originals, so from memory I think they have some annotations etc.

The kickstarter one seems to be a very clean version - perhaps re-typeset.

Don't they have a laser printer at work?

The idea is quite nice, but seems a bit dear to me.

I know limited run printing isn't cheap, but there's no glossy images or anything to really push the price up.

Anyway, nice for those really interested, but not for me.

    Brilliant thanks for that.

    Back when men-were-men ;-)

Amazing reading the trimetable for events for days 4,5,6...

Brings a tear to my eye.

You can't pick up a new copy of the colour version of the NASA edition for less than about £70 and this looks to be much better quality.

And I'm not going to get my hands on this any time ever:

    So I'm in

I haven't decided whether I will buy one or not but it's a great excuse to post (and watch) this again: Apollo 11 Lunar Landing.

Second one - the Apollo 11 Logo for me - nice retro-look logo.

I'm inclining towards that one. It's clever and an authentic NASA design as well.

Just in case you haven't spent enough money on Apollo stuff I noticed this project had been approved https://ideas.lego.com/projects/76841 a 1,200 piece, 1m tall Saturn-V rocket. Not yet out (maybe 6-12 months off). Looks a terrific model.

And on a small tangent ...
I think this has been shared here before ... but for all space exploration fans ... check this site ...

    http://www.firstmenonthemoon.com/

Minute by minute recording of commentary during moon landing.
Plays the audio (ground crew one channel, ground to capsule in the other) with visuals from lunar lander.

    Fascinating ...

Similarly, if you've got Netflix, the film "The Last Man on the Moon" is definitely worth a watch. Quite interesting, not least for the watch-spotting opportunities.

BTW, I have no dog in the race, but I prefer the first cover art (the mission patch) by a pretty wide margin.

It's an excellent film, Gene Cernan is such an engaging and (ironically) down to earth person. I also enjoyed the BBC 4 documentary "Cosmonauts: How Russia Won the Space Race" very much indeed.

I'm sure that all who are making the choice at the moment are happy to hear other opinions of the cover art. Although it was a collaborative effort, Michael Collins - one of the most likeable and erudite astronauts and a personal hero - was largely behind the mission patch design.

I can't see much point in anything but the Mission Patch either, personally, but I guess it's nice to have a choice

PS Moot point of course, as I'm not buying one...

I am SO having that when it comes out. I'm a bit of a Saturn V fanboy so I have gone with the fourth cover option for my copy of the Kickstarter flight plan. :)

I've not actually seen mine yet because it has been delivered to family in the UK to await a summer visit but there was rather mixed feedback on the Kickstarter page with lots of complaints regarding quality. I don't have high expectations now so will either be pleasantly surprised or putting it down to experience.

The Lego Saturn V looks great!

Had the pleasure of meeting and spending some time with Mike Foal last year.

I am not a space nut but he was amazing and his life story and career is truly exceptional.

I saw him at a Pint of Science talk last year and thought he was fantastic. I've met and attended quite a few NASA astronaut lectures and he is definitely one of the most interesting.
He'll be back in London next month if you fancy hearing from him and getting a selfie and autograph.

Where can you order these pre-release?

I want to use it as an aid to (further) teach my daughters about the moon landings. And I just want to play with it!

Looks good on my coffee table! It's excellent quality as would be expected and its fascinating reading the second by second, minute by minute plan of the mission. I've been involved in projects that have needed interminable planning meetings that never seemed to end but this takes it to a completely different level! I couldn't imagine being responsible for getting this amount of information pulled together in a coherent manner. Hats off to them:)
