How do you work out what a watch is worth when buying

Hi all I usually search the web and find out what any items I am interested in are or have been selling for and make an offer on that, but what do you do with watches if you can't find any decent info out there ?

    Thanks

    Robert

Is it a particular model you are after? Naming it might get a response on the site. Due to the wealth of watch related info it must be really rare or at least under the radar.
I had a slightly similar situation with a 90's UG but spotted one reference on a site that gave me some form of indication .

You need to name the brand at least, some manufactures values hold up really well, whilst others can have a huge depreciation if you buy new.

    Details please.

If its for sale, then it must be for a price. If you like it and feel you need to spend that much to get it, buy it! If you feel its not worth it, you don't! Simples

If you tell us what you're looking at, I'm sure we can use our collective Googling mojo to get some info for you

P.S. I doubt its such a rare piece that there would be no reference at all anywhere, unless we're talking about some one-off George Daniels piece or vintage.

It looks to be a brand new watch, so I don't really see the problem. Be aware - as well as the international shipping charge, you will also be charged 20% VAT and a £12.00 couriers fees when it lands in Blighty. If you are happy with the 'total' price - then buy.

Sorry I only posted that as it's the only link I could find of the watch after searching, the one I'm currently looking at is s/h and on sale in another forum I visit

If people posted more specific information with questions they'd get far more helpful answers.

'How long's a piece of string'?

With older/vintage watches there are specific areas to look at depending on the model. However, it's an exact science, valuations will always vary depending on the individual and how badly they want the watch.

Okay, so eventually you post a link to a watch and after we comment on it you tell us that it's not that watch - yours is being sold by Dave in Dublin on a different watch forum.

FFS just post a link to the damn watch and we can see what all the mystery is about.

Longines have quite a depreciation from new which is a shame as they are rather nice, but it does boil down to what has already been stated, if YOU like it and are happy with the price then buy it.

    No upset, just teeth pulling.

So brand new is $630 inc shipping, which is very roughly £525 - then add on £117 for vat and handling charge - so approx. £642 delivered to your door.

The secondhand one has been reduced from £400 to £350. Offer him £325 inc RMSD and it sounds like a decent deal.

    Hope this helps.

As been said already, that seems cheap enough, go for it if you like it

I usually watch it on ebay. Its usually a good indicator of market value. So after a few have sold the average value is what i will bid upto.

Rolex sell everyday in eBay. Just type the model you are looking for and filter sold items. There will be a few anomalies just discontinue them.

Good point, will try that. It's good to know the rrp too before making offers.

RRPs don't tend to mean much but they are on Rolex website

An example. Say I was to buy a new submariner rrp is £6250 and i see one for sale used from 2015 what would you expect to offer not knowing how much it was in 2015?

Surely the RRP at the time of release is irrelevant. Pay £25k for a DRSD, does it matter that the RRP for that watch in the year of release was probably around £250

So how would you estimate a good value?

Read post #12 on this thread.

Use all available facts and compare against the current RRP - what it was selling for in 2012, 2007 or 1986 is completely meaningless.
