Can you find out your rolexes history

If you are going to buy a prowned Rolex and you have the serial number ,can you find out its history.
Do you need to ring a shop or is there a Rolex website

What do you mean by history? To me history equals a lot more than simply where it was originally purchased.

Although I imagine the simple answer is no. Hence why papers are generally desired. I also don't see why they would freely divulge the information, breach of confidentiality and such.

If you walk into an AD, they will tell you that it was sold in the town of X in whatever year and they will tell you it's service history ie, what year was it taken in for a service by Rolex or a other AD.

They will not give out names of previous owners.

I have taken several Rolex's into RSC over the years which I had purchased (since sold) that came without papers and RSC told me the date the watch was first sold and the store that sold it.

Mainly asking about service history and if any parts were changed when this was done ,not interested in previous owners
