1 week in Vegas - What to do?

So, I somehow managed to pursuade my wife to stay at home with the kids whilst I go to Vegas with my little brother for a week in May.

We got a great deal and for £400 each we have flights and hotel booked.

I've never been before and looking for any hidden gem suggestions for things to do other than the usual sights which will no doubt keep us entertained.

    Cheers,

    Jonathan

    Lucky you.

Go to Grand Canyon from Vegas by plane or heli and go down onto the mighty Colorado for short cruise and have picnic.

Walk the strip at night and people watch. Visit hotels with attractions e.g. The Venetian and bellagio with dancing waters. Go to old Vegas and compare the old and new.

Try to go to San Diego and hit gaslamp quarter.

Above all have a great time whatever you do!!

If Art Deco architecture and engineering on a monumental scale are up your street then pay Hoover Dam a visit.

Not necessarily in this order, and aside from the obvious stuffl cruising the strip, laughing at ridiculous hotels/people etc

The Double Down for pool (cues and balls, not bikinis and shorts), and shots. Great place to kick off the night.
Rent a dirty, noisy car and head off into Fire Valley for sunset.
    Trashy burgers at an In-N-Out.
The breakfast buffet at the Bellagio. Beware the queue....
Drinks in the Mix Lounge, roof bar at the top of The Hotel/Mandalay Bay. Great view from the toilet...
And Crazy Horse 3 for dancing girls- and be sure to get your concierge to order their free limo to pick you up.

Missed my flight home on the last visit. Not allowed to go anymore.

    A week in Vegas - To Do list;

    Book extra week in Vegas.

Upgrade your rooms with the sly $20 (it may now be $50!) across the counter.
    Gamble until you're bored.

Day trips - Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam if you can be arsed - it's a FULL day of your time, (6am until 10pm when we did it).
Take in a show. Blue Man group are good value.

Find some of the more unusual bars. We found a great karaoke bar and an even better arcade bar (possibly called "Insert Coins" but I was leathered!). Quick googles shows a newish one called Game-Nest. $8 per hour and all the arcade machines you can shake a stick at on Free-Play!! Almst related, the Pinball Hall of Fame - hell yes!
There are a handful of "secret bars" around the place, I didn't attend any but The Laundry Room looks worth hunting down!

I dunno, a week might not be long enough. If you enjoy a turn on the tables or the slots then you'll probably spend most of your time drifting between the casinos!

If you go to Hoover Dam, don't forget to call at Boulder City enroute. Was basically built for the workers that built the dam.

Decide before you leave home how much money you are willing to lose before you STOP gambling...and then commit to it.

If you've got the spare cash, get a helicopter to the Grand Canyon, otherwise it's the best part of a whole day travelling there and back, and the desert until you get there is pretty dull.

A lot closer and very nice for a drive and walk through is the Valley of Fire, which is not as dramatic as the Grand Canyon, but is still pretty cool in terms of enormous red rocks. It's about a 90 minute drive away, and you can do the Hoover Dam on the way there or back.

I went with my wife and kids for a family wedding, so unfortunately don't have any recommendations for the usual stripe clubs and shooting ranges etc!

There are lots of watch boutiques out there though in the many shopping malls.

I've been before for 12 nights and it killed us.
Helicopter to the Canyon , via Hoover Dam, is a must. Plus the Fountains are a spectacular sight. We didn't do Old Town so are heading there this year for a few drinks. Gun Club was good fun but we didn't really walk around the hotels and shops enough so there's a few days for you to kill.

As another posted said when you get to check-in, slip a $50 note in the back of your passport and ask "are there any upgrades available". They will either upgrade you or say "...sorry sir we don't do that here" and pass the $50 back to you in the passport.

As others have said already, Grand Canyon heli trip. We did this with Sundance Helicoptors and booked the VIP trip. It was very good. Limo pick up at hotel, fly over the hoover dam, set down in the GC and have a champagne picnic plus some time to wander around, fly back as sun sets and then do a night time fly up and down the strip. It was only a bit more than the standard trip but made it all the more special. I'd highly recommend it.

Some other things we did which I don't think have been mentioned, were seeing Penn & Teller's live show and the Dolphin experience at Mirage. Saw 'One' by Circque du Soleiu, visit down-town.

And finally, get up extra early and run the full length of the strip in each direction each day to help burn off all the calories you'll be eating. Enjoy!

    Hoover Dam

Check the What's On guides for your dates. There could be some Boxing, MMA, Basket Ball ect. worth watching live.

Don't forget the big shows too, Elton could be worth seeing, or some magic like Dynamo or Penn & Teller.

And if you make it to Zion, you might as well carry on to Bryce Canyon - it is absolutely stunning.

Thanks everyone, you've not disappointed with plenty of suggestions. I'm going to start googling everything and I've got a little black book to put all the details in. We're staying at the Westgate Resort so not directly on the strip but I've never even considered the tipping/ cash in the passport at check in. Does it really work?

Said by others, but to reiterate,
2 days in Vegas is enough, you will never be closer to one of the wonders of the world: the Grand Canyon, Brice Canyon too...

The best trips are within an hour or so from Vegas - otherwise you end spending too long in your car (the problem with Zion/Bryce - fantastic places, but you're better off staying in Springdale UT for those; Grand Canyon is best by helicopter or plane, or better staying over).

Red Rock Canyon is about 25 mins from The Strip, and Valley of Fire and Mt Charleston are under an hour - all are worth the effort.
