Anyone got one?
Got a newish car arriving Monday and thought perhaps a good idea to get one of these considering the amount of dangerous drivers about.
Are they easy to install and use? Any recommendations? Are they worth it etc?
You want a street guardian. Check hiniko website for hardware. Very simple to install.
My camera is hardwired via a battery saver and works via motion. So is effectively on alert at all times. I got hit last year while the car was parked and I was in a customers home. It was dark and I didn't see the damage until the next morning.
The cam caught the idiot that hit me and when I approached on the evening they denied all knowledge. Despite them getting out of the car to inspect mine and their own for damage at the time!
They soon changed their mind when I informed them of the video footage.
Its a very small discreet camera so can't be seen from outside.
Worth every penny.
You need a discreet camera like that in Walsall if they see it they will nick it

I had the Nextbase 312gw dash cam fitted a few months ago. It was hard wired in by Halfords and cost @ £110 fully installed. Very happy with the footage.

Mine has motion sensors which are user pre set, one for normal driving mode, and one for parking mode.
The normal driving mode sensor 'marks' events when there is a jolt or bump.
The parking mode does the same, but the sensor level is far lower.
I also have the facility to receive alerts when the car is bumped/tampered with whilst parked, and get a live video stream of the incident.
In my experience - a dash cam is an absolute must nowadays... Not just to sort out arguments/insurance claims - but to potenitally keep you out of prison in the event of someone dying in a collision...

I find that an increasing number of pedestrians take no responsibility for their own safety and step off the pavement into the road without warning, straying diagonally into the road without bothering to first look in both directions. They usually give me a dirty look as I brake or swerve around them or just for being there at all.
One chap on a bicycle rode at night straight across all four lanes of a dual carriageway (bisecting it) dressed in black with no lights and was furious that I was there on the other direction and hadn't slowed to a stop to give him my blessing and wave him across.
I'm glad to have a dashcam - there's only so much you can do. The family of these fools would blame the 'evil' motorist every time.

Wow that has opened my eyes to a new scam. OK the footage is currently third world, bit what happens there...........
its picking up motion in the picture, not motion of the car its fitted to. It pre buffers the recording to 5 seconds before the event so nothing is missed. Great bit of kit.
Will soon be investing in one of these. They seem to be Essential nowadays

Anyone has any experience with the ones that come with some of Garmin's 'drive' satnav?

I will soon be getting one as they are a superb idea and as others have said, really are a must these days. The one thing which has put me off though is that whenever I get cut up or witness appalling driving I usually notice these people have a dash cam - I wonder if they think that having a dash cam makes them feel invincible and they therefore drive worse as a result; although the dash cam would only incriminate themselves for bad driving. It's a strange thing; naught queer as folk eh!
I will no doubt get one to safeguard my car and journeys but shall endeavour to keep driving to the Highway code and maintain use of mirrors, indicators and lane discipline.
I'm really surprised that car manufacturers haven't made them optional equipment.

An essential piece of equipment nowadays IMHO, there are far too many idiots on the roads.
I use a Blackvue which is a few years old now, but it is very discreet when fitted to he windscreen and a much newer Nextbase 512G (in a different vehicle) which is much bulkier when fitted than the Blackvue, but has far superior image quality.
Neither are very good at recording reg plates when it is dark, but still better than not having one at all for what they cost.
It works the other way around for me.
Knowing that your dashcam is recording your own speed, makes me drive more sensibly!
I spent the extra and went with blackvue as small and discreet without all the screens etc.
There was another one manufactured Oxford way but cannot remember what they were called.
Wonder why it is that there are 'so many idiots on the road these days', apart from the person who makes the statement?

I did consider one of these myself as it seems to kill two birds with one stone. The big drawback is that you would probably want to remove from the car every time you left it (I would anyway) and on replacing it would need to take some time to realign it. I'm not sure that they offer the same features of a dedicated dash cam either.
I ended up with a Thinkware F770 which I am going to hardwire when a dedicated option connector I've ordered arrives in the post.
I laughed at my Dad when he told me he was getting one. He hardly drives anywhere. This happened on a Friday afternoon a few weeks ago...thanks to the footage the guy was cautioned and the insurance was sorted quickly.

I am not sure what you think you are adding to this thread with that sort of utterly pointless comment. Maybe you are too busy trolling on forums to have noticed that the general standard of driving and consideration shown to other road users on the UK roads is deteriorating.
I bought the cameras because I was very nearly badly injured twice in one day. Once by an HGV driver jumping a red light while he was going full tilt on a dual carriageway, while I was on a green light to turn across the road in front of him. The other when a car travelling in the opposite direction veered over the white lines, hit the car in front of me, causing the (circa 70 year old) driver to need an ambulance & a trip to A&E to have glass removed from his eyes. The driver of the offending car didn't stop, neither did anyone else stop to offer him assistance or even call the police to give details of the vehicle reg. Even though I did stop to help the injured driver, I could not help the police to find the offending car driver as I did not have his registration - I was too busy swerving to avoid him.
I am far from a perfect driver, but I would like to think that I would have the decency to stop if I had caused an accident, particularly if it had resulted in someone needing hospital attention. Maybe that makes me an idiot in your eyes though.

The police weren't really that interested as he didn't actually hit my Dad so there was an "assault" but there was "intent to injure". Apparently he "admitted to the offence upon seeing the footage"!!! Couldn't really deny it.
If the Police hadn't acted I had a DVD of the footage ready to posted to his Wife so she could see what a knob her husband was :)
What a nasty piece of work. If you can't drive without losing your temper and threatening other road users then you should lose your licence while you have anger management lessons. Hope it doesn't put your Dad off driving in the future.

After having one of my cars hit a few times when parked up over the last 9-10 months I'm seriously considering a front and rear set-up and the F770 has come up as a serious contender.
Had one fitted after i was hit by a moron in a road sweeper vehicle. These thngs have exterior cameras so that the driver has a 360 view, so that they dont hit anyone!
Even then it took the council 2 years to pay up, after a court order!

Yup, I use this as the rear camera in my setup. It's really good and more importantly the app is also quite well developed.
I would send it in but my Dad is 74 and worried that the guy might turn up on his doorstep...I respected his wishes but it winds me up every day when I think about it.
He has a business (actually embroidered on the fleece he's wearing) so might try something stealth.
I went to a local car electronic specialist to inquire about getting one of these fitted.
Apparently as my car has DAB i have to go for the more expensive camera that costs c£300 (i dont recall the manufacturer AV.. something), the person at the shop said some of the cheaper cameras can interfere with the DAB radio. Anyone heard this?
They also wanted £100 for fitting, i notice Halfords charge £35, but most of the cameras they sold were too large for my liking.
I've not heard that DAB issue before, mines certainly not had any problems, Mivue 538.

If it had either emission or susceptibility issues it would be illegal, blokes talking nonsense
There are some issues where the GPS antenna in 'SOME' dash-cams can affect the GPS and DAB radio signals in 'SOME' cars, but it depends on where they all are in proximity to each other I suspect, so may or may not be an issue for you!
I have DAB in my car with the Nextbase 512G camera and have not had any problems at all. I think my camera was around £130 from memory. It is quite bulky though due to the mount.
That guy is a real piece of work. He waits for your Dad to turn his back and then assaults him, not only a wanker but a coward too. Can't believe he got away with a caution! Send the footage to the Daily Mail, if gets on there he's history. I can see the headline, "Man assaults 74 year old pensioner after reversing into him with his 4x4"

If it was my Dad that's the 'nice option' I'd be pursuing, along with a link on pistonheads etc. The guy looks to be a deranged coward.

Had a fella drift across the road into my path just yesterday- - he snatched it back just in time, but I suspect he was checking his phone/texting at the time. If he had clipped me, the dash cam footage I got would have prevented a knock for knock claim as he would surely have denied he was over the line.

If I were to buy one of these - would I be able to get someone to hard wire it into the car? How big a job / cost would that be, and what type of shop / person does this kind of thing?

See if you can wire it yourself if it has Micro/mini USB power. - just run your cable round the window edging (if you want the camera up by your rear view mirror.

I heard on the radio that they have an offer on this weekend, so may be worth trying to snag a deal before your car arrives on Monday.
I think mine was £130 all in, which included hard-wiring in (very professionally done by Halfords), an 8gb SD card, and a carry pouch for the unit.

I do not understand why these are not standard fit in cars.
THere are cameras of sorts in most of the modern cars for headlight management and more expensive options such as night vision.
At a manufacturer volume these would be a very cheap option to fit and integrate.
