    Submariner...date or non date?

I'm sure this question has been asked plenty of times before and sorry if I've missed an existing thread...

Looking to purchase a new Rolex Sub but unsure of whether to get the date or non date version.

    Thoughts and pictures welcome?

Try them both on (if you can) and see what one you like best.

Personally I like the ND because of the symmetry in the dial, however, already owning a rolex without a date complication, if I was to buy a Sub, I would now get one with a date for a bit of variety...

I've owned both several times over and if you can live without the date function you'll have a nicer looking watch IMO.

What else do you have in your collection? Will you wear it a lot? Can you be bothered resetting the date and time?

The simplicity of no date is nice, but how often do you look for the date?

Ask yourself these type of questions, but either way you get a nice watch.

To add to the landslide, no date looks far better to me.

As a pure tool watch no date would be my preference, but I find they end up looking rather boring so would go for a date version (with cyclops removed or crystal replaced for one without)

I bought my Sub purely as a weekend watch so don't need the date and bought the watch which I thought looked the nicest. If I needed to wear it at work then I probably would have picked the date version.

No Date. If I was to spend close to 6k on a watch with a date I'd want it right every month, not just 7.

My only other watch is a gold datejust on a lizard strap, this goes very well with a suit/shirt and would continue to be my daily.

The sub is purely for weekends.

Initially i was favoring a non-date sub, but in more recent years i have come to appreciate the cyclops with date. If i had to choose, id pick the sub with date today

No date looks much better, and is the classic Sub, sadly the date is very useful (at least for me). I wanted the LV (Kermit) so didn't have an option, but man if they'd made such watch sans date ...

To give some advice the cyclop isn't really bothering me at all, and I really disliked it from images. The worst is that everyone instantly recognizes the watch.

No date for me. I tried on a couple of these with the cyclops onboard at the weekend and could not live with it.

Then no date. Who cares what the date is when it is the weekend!?

ND for me as well, as I don't like the cyclops and if date I'd prefer a 16600 SD.

If you already have a cyclops on your Datejust then I'd go Non-Date on your Submariner.

I would wear a no date watch for a week if I was you to determine how much you use the date complication.

I have to have the date, I sign & date my name to forms several times a day and I check the date instinctively every time.

If you can live without date save the money.

But.... I think the date makes the watch more recognisable if you like kudos.

Thanks, as mentioned, you need to see if you can live without the date. It didn't take me long to start remembering the date as most of the watches I wear have it, worth it though, flies under the radar without Cyclops

With you on this but I'd prefer the SD4K. Unfortunately prices on this need time to settle.

I was a total date/cyclops fan but now prefer the non date.

However, I have just bought a 2010 pre Ceramic with date. This is the watch I always wanted and this included date with cyclops - to me the quintessential Rolex sports look.

I also have a BLNR and have to say it looks fab with the date/cyclops.

  28. #28
Just to follow up, I have a DaytonaC and constantly look at it for the date!

I have had both and sold the Date. I don't mind the cyclops but just preferred the no date because it looked slightly better to my eyes. I will have a cyclops on my new Seadweller when that eventually arrives though.

Although not date has symmetry in its favour, I have always regarded the cyclops as part of the Rolex look.

    Date for me

    + 1

I would have loved a SD4K, it's probably the best of both worlds.

Ive not worn either of them...

I do want one, will probably get one as my retirement present to myself!

I cant see the date on ANY! of my watches though!, (57 year old eyes!)...so I "think" I will probably get a non date...

Though of course, I think its best to at least look at them both and try them on.

  33. #33
I much prefer the non dates perfect symmetry but one cannot deny the date function is very useful!

I chose to go for a no date. It is the classic sub look. Many will disagree, but I don't like a cyclops on a sub. IMHO it detracts from the look. I also prefer the non ceramic bezel 14060m...

Haven't seen a photo of a good, clean, pre ceramic Submariner date in ages. I've always thought no date but I now think no date ceramic or date pre ceramic because of that pic. Stunning watch.

If i was to sell my Explorer II, and my 2254, i'd replace them with a used non date sub.

I let my date Rolex go and replaced it with a non-date. I prefer the symmetry of it and I didn't like the cyclops.

No date for me as for reasons already mentioned - no cyclops
Hope to acquire one in the future but second hand prices are still quite firm so I guess a long wait for me.
Do you think Rolex will ever release a ND with a non-black bezel?

ND for me, the symmetry of the dial looks amazing. Also the first Sub did not have a date. And as a bonus, it is cheaper.

    ND

Date is useful. So is a roof rack. That's why they don't come as standard on a M4.

I'm with the rest ... ND for me ... and I'd always chose 3 hands with no complications given a choice.
(this arrived at the weekend ... most pleased.)

No right or wrong answer here, just personal taste. Love my sub date, so date for me.
