So I became an accidental podcaster...

Over the last 6 months, I've had a lot of time on my hands.

In fact, being made redundant, and Going from a 60 hour week at a slightly insane tech startup to nothing has not been easy.

So I started looking for things to fill my days.

The casual Omega Forums London GTG of March 2016, turned into time 4A pint come November 2016, and by March 2017 had branding, a sponsor, 33 people, and name badges (a revelation).

I've been having a lot of fun doing that, and along the way met some really interesting people, and heard some great stories... so thought it would be fun to share them.

Realising my not so secret desire to be a reporter on This American Life, or BBC Radio 4 - I bring you the time 4A pint podcast... episode 1.

    https://soundcloud.com/time4apintpodcast

Would love to hear your thoughts - a gentle reminder that throwing fruit and vegetables is permitted, but please no stones.

You can subscribe through iTunes here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/...220029799?mt=2

    Cheers

    Chris

Excellent Podcast -especially as you say you have never done one before.
Your presentation /editing skills every bit as good as a professional broadcaster.
    Well done, Sir !

Really good Chris, should be a fun series.

My website (www.basschat.co.uk) holds semi regular semi-formal 'Bashes' around the country, and a yearly 'National' bash in the SE every year. They can take a lot to organise but as I think you'll agree, they really help make the forum a friendly place when you know some people 'behind the avatar'.

I'm in York now but the train to London is very easy so I'll try and come along to a meet - though the next is my wedding so I'd better give that one a miss.

    Cheers
    Chris

Huge thanks for the support chaps - I was incredibly nervous putting myself out there, worried that I sound awful, was talking nonsense, and that this would bomb, but everyone's been really positive about it. :)

Working on two more episodes this week, and plan to get one out each Friday/Saturday.

Ok... so been working on this a lot this week.

Episode 2 is in the can, and will be live tomorrow afternoon (GMT)

Lots of people requested photos to go with the audio content... I am going to try and do this, there are pictures from the recording on Wednesday night... there was also bad lighting, and alcohol...

The best way I could think of to do this was to build a blog site and incorporate the Soundcloud audio and pictures into blog posts for each interview.... so that's what I've done.

    Site is now live: https://www.time4apint.com/

    Episode 2 coming tomorrow. :)

I thought it was very polished - it's surprisingly difficult to talk without umms and aahs! If you're doing it to earn a living then you have to do a lot of it, and in my limited experience of doing it as an amateur it's sometimes difficult to maintain the quality when you do it more often e.g. finding suitable topics to discuss and putting the time into a good edit. But if you do it because you enjoy the whole process, that's when you get the best results.

    FairPlay

Well done for getting off your arse and doing it!!
Good listening to be honest and you make it sound like you have been doing it for years!! Your voice sounds weirdly familiar almost like someone you listen to on a regular basis on radio or telly??

Really good and keep it going!! Would you not be able to add a YouTube style channel to the podcasts to get some footage of the watches and add some artsy photos/cinematography in??

Anyway good luck and I might just go an subscribe now!

    Chris

    Congratulations.

Speaking from experience, it seems that the key to success (or perhaps the key to avoiding failure) is to keep at it. Periodic 'blog posts, such as mine, get little traffic. However, if I post regularly on, e.g. IG, I get a lot more engagement. I still haven't figured out if I have an audience, let alone what it wants (if indeed, it wants anything from me).

    Best of luck.

I'm taking that as a good thing!

Video is a non starter for me - I don't have the kit, nor the skill, nor the budget to acquire either... so audio, and still photo galleries under the posts is the route I'm going to take ;)

    Please do!

Would be great to hit the iTunes charts as a newcomer. :)

    Thank you!

I'm determined to get one out a week, I've got a few lined up to edit now, so should have a little buffer if interviews become harder to get to :D

Instagram definitely give you a little stats bump every day!

    Hi Chris,

Editing something down to 15-20 mins shouldn't really take that long, depending on how much you're recording in the first place. Editing audio is part of what I do for a living. If you want to send me raw audio I'd be happy to do some editing for you if it makes your life easier.

I like the idea of the podcast and listened to the first one - good luck with it and ping me a PM if you want a hand!

    Thanks Toby!

It was the initial not knowing what the heck I was doing that took so long... so lots of takes of bad audio, until I got something I was prepared to use.

Episode 2, the interview with James, took me around 30 minutes in Logic X to get how I wanted. :)

Good job with the podcasts Chris. And Time 4 A Pint gatherings is a great idea too. I'm signed up, but might have to miss the April one as I am now travelling.
    cheers,

Logic X! You've spent some cash! Good work - you've done a great job with the edit. I've listened to the first full episode and it's brilliantly done. You've got a great radio voice too! Will subscribe - it's a perfect length for my tube journey!

Give me a shout if you need any help :)

I worked for Apple for a long time... and was given licenses for a couple of cool bits of software on the creative side of things... this is the first time I've ever used anything to edit Audio... but I figured if I had it, I should use it! :D

Thanks for your kind words Toby, I hope it will get better with time as I learn more of what I'm doing, and relax into the interviews. :D
