    Seiko Monster Service

My 2008 Black Monster is gaining time unacceptably and needs a service. I'm very fond of the watch, that came from SC some years ago for £70. My local repairer has quoted £150, which is beyond economic repair.

Can anyone recommend an alternative for a service at tolerable cost? I don't want to retire it unless there is no alternative.

    Cheers

    Dave

Their price list looks like £155.

Or our very own Duncan who posts as Cannop and trades as TheWatchBloke. Highly recommended and a Seiko specialist to boot.

Actually I think he may in fact post as Thewatchbloke now also.

Before you send it, tap the watch quite hard into the palm of your hand.! There is a known issue with the hairspring binding on older monsters and this often sorts it. Honest!

How much times does it gain? My Gen 1 is gaining around a minute a day, which is irritating, but as you say it's not worth spending £150 on.

I'll certainly try the palm of my hand trick (fnarr, fnarr) when I'm next home.

Make sure you're wearing the watch

Have you considered simply buying a new movement (they're cheap) and having a local watchmaker drop it in for you? Could be less total cost that trying to repair the existing movement.

I've tried this before! It doesn't run crazy fast, more like 40 secs a day. It's out of tolerance, and just a bit irritating. I'm sure it's due a service as it's 9 years old

Just buy a new one, it will be Gen 2 and will have the better 4R36 movement.

Picking up a decent monster is getting increasingly difficult

But perfectly doable though if second hand 1st gen. A lot of chancers out there right now though unfortunately. They can quite regularly be found for about £110 or so, but too many sellers have decided they're worth as much as £170 despite them coming up for far less. Instant gratification society or something.

See if you can pick up a 4R36 & Stem/Crown for a gen 2 and transplant it - best of both worlds

You've obviously never been to Doncaster.

    Sent on the run.

I also have a 4R36 Monster and its also gaining around 35-40 secs per day. It is very annoying and as I wear it daily, I am finding myself having to adjust it at least twice a week. I too would be interested in finding someone who could address this for me at an economical cost.

If you do try them, it would be useful if you could update the thread and let us know you get on...

Or Warrington. Several years ago I attended a residential training course in nearby Daresbury and managed to pop into Warrington only once during the lunchtime break. My abiding memory was of a young lady pushing a pram down the street who, from a distance, I thought was wearing blue leggings. It was only when she came a little closer that I saw the individual veins and realised that she was wearing neither leggings nor tights.

Did you get your Monster serviced? I’ve got a couple that could do with servicing.
