No idea but it's clearly thriving. Muscular beastie!

Impossible to say, as there is no scale. It looks like a large ( ish ) house cat. Not a lynx, it's more of a puma like house cat.
European Wildcat I think (in French a Chat Forestier).

It's short haired and very muscular, nothing like a house cat. Very odd and not a European wildcat either. Have they seen it closer up and describe its actual size?
Is there a nuclear power station near by? It looks some kind of mutant super cat.
This is a lynx. That looks like it is from Africa!!
As already said difficult with no scale but could be a chartreux or a chausie.
either that or a big dog.
An escaped lioness? Certainly got the muscle mass and paw
Get one of them to go and stand in the field at the spot where the cat is now, then take a Photo of them from the same place as the other. That should give you a realistic scale of the size of the cat.
Beastie does look like a lioness!
It looks half pit bull half lion. Id be installing electified chain link fence around my property!
Tiddles?
I think it's a matter of scale. Large house cat tomcats can look just like that. I have a tabby tomcat who is similarly muscular-looking. The cat in the picture could even be a pregnant female.
The fact that it is walking through relatively long grass makes it looks bulkier overall (i.e. shorter-seeming legs) than it really is.
We really need some scale to figure out how large the cat is. Without any idea of scale so far, it's almost certainly a house cat imo but I could believe it could be a wildcat or, perhaps more likely, a hybrid wildcat/house cat. The apparent lack of stripes in the photo doesn't tell us much... stripes can be difficult to see even in a direct photo.

Whatever it is...I wouldn't go and try to pet it!

If it's causing you problems I suggest a PM to 'cilla...
^Kirk, fnar.
The only thing I've seen that looks like that is this...
Wild? It's positively livid.
A dog?

Will try and get some more pictures over the next week and hopefully a better idea of size. Still got me puzzled.
I took the kids to the zoo today and saw something that made me remember this thread.
Could it be felis silvestris?
The proportions of the head and tail to the body suggest a big cat
Also the amount of muscle and the fact its very smooth haired
No way is that anything like a domestic species

Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
It just needs a cuddle...
I neve did get any better photos sent however they confirmed after better sightings and research they were the European wildcat.
Going back I see it was suggested before me twice. In the third bloody answer no less. I read the thread then, but I didn't re-read it too well before posting. Waal, it wasn't the first time I rushed into something and made myself a fool, won't be the last.
It's a slow worm
Could it be a Canada Lynx?
Wormus Retardus?

At what point do you decide the lynx has had enough, before you lose a couple of fingers?
He (or she) is lovely. It's just what cats like, especially the base of their ears. We can do that to ours for ages (ok they are a tad smaller) and if you stop they nerf your hand until you carry on. Partly you are spreading their scent and they aren't having to do anything!
I'd love a big cat for a pet but its altogether a bad idea! I haven't been scratched by any of ours for months and months and they don't bite (unless you're a mouse and then look out) but would you want to take the risk...
Agreed. They love it if they love you. Sometimes they can be unpredictable and the first sign of their displeasure is teeth sinking into your thumb. I never had that with mine, but ones we had as kids would only take so much. When you tame a cat from a kitten you become its mum, really, and it won't bite you. Maybe.
