Thread: Tree Pollen Allergy

    Tree Pollen Allergy

I've always suffered something called perennial rhinitis which was really bad when I was a kid, but got better as I got older.

However, the last 3 days I've been suffering big time. My eyes are shot red, puffy and weeping. I'm sneezing at least 50 times a day and my nose is dripping, and now red raw with all the wiping. I don't have a common cold.

It's all the symptoms of really bad hay fever, but it's too early for that, and I never have suffered with that anyway.

So, a bit of googling tells me tree pollen is currently high, and birch pollen is notorious for these symptoms.

Secondly, I recently started an allergic reaction to apples (never had a problem with apples before) which is also links to tree pollen. So maybe like the apple allergy this type of allergy has just started on me, as I've never particularly noticed it at this time of year before.

So, I have a suspicion I have found the culprit, but anyone else suffering with similar symptoms at the moment which will give me confidence I'm not reaching the wrong conclusion.

My Asthma has been particularly bad over the last week or so and I've put that down to a similar cause, as I've noticed it before.. I used to suffer like you when I was younger so know just how bad it can be, so you really have my sympathy....

    My good lady wife who is an Allergy Nurse Specialist has indicated that you may have oral allergy syndrome;

    http://www.allergyuk.org/oral-allerg...lergy-syndrome

If you cook the fruit the symptoms will not occur.

Some people who are allergic to tree pollen also experienceirritation in the throat when eating certain raw fruit andvegetables, such as apples and celery. This is due to a crossreactionwith pollen and is referred to as oral allergysyndrome.

An ex workmate and I used to walk through a very small wooded area on the way to work. There were less than 20 trees in there however at certain times of the year he'd get to work with swollen watering eyes....all due to tree pollen.

Interesting. I suffer from hay fever in the summer months but have had an itchy sensation for a few days and have sneezed a few times for no apparent reason. I also have a strange reaction to apples in that they make me cough, as though something is stuck in my throat. I'm now thinking these things could be related....

you may want to consider an allergy skin prick test? available privately at not much cost
I had one a few years back and found out I was allergic to tree pollen and cats
...I live in the new forest and have 2 cats!

I suffer from the same thing but have always put it down to hay fever. Lots of raw fruit and vegetables also make my throat very itchy, Melon and grapes being the worst offenders.

I used to take a Cetirizine based antihistamine daily for the tree pollen allergy but always found it hit and miss. I then started to use Beconase nasal spray and the results were incredible. If you haven't tired it yet I strongly urge you to give it a go, its on the supermarket shelves so no need for a prescription. It also seems to reduce my reaction to the fruits and vegetables so seems to be win win.

Yes, I think a skin prick test is in order. And I will avoid apples for a while...

I had the same symptoms and then the prick test showed it to be birch tree allergy.
The worst offending fruits are apples and pears, followed by raw carrot and less so, celery.
Minutes after eating either my lips go numb, the back of my throat starts itching and the this gradually works it's way into my ears.
It wears off after about ten minutes.
The reason I was given was that some protein in birch tree pollen is the same that you find in the fruits.
I take Fexofenadine and avoid apples and pears, which is a bit of a bummer as I love both.

Not a glove I have similar symptoms to you Notaglove.

It started about 6 years ago with early spring hay fever symptoms. About 4 years ago I started to have mild reactions to some fruits and nuts, blueberries and almonds in particular.

Then last year I had a more pronounced reaction to a plum. My mouth and threat went tingly and I near enough lost my voice. There were antihistamines to hand and I feel they did there job and stopped it getting worse. That incident prompted a visit to the GP.

I ended up having skin prick tests to which I had no reaction. I was then given the diagnosis of Oral Allergy Syndrome. All I have to do is avoid certain uncooked fruits and take antihistamines at the current time of year, when the Birch trees are in bloom.

I get similar symptoms early in the hay fever season. I`ve also developed a mild allergy to certain type of apples and pears so I never eat them raw thesedays. Tingly mouth and throat for around 30 minutes after eating one. I`ve suffered with hay fever since childhood but the apple allergy started around 10 years ago............strange.
