Thread: If you could just "Know" the time...

If you could just "Know" the time...

Would you still wear a watch?

However it happened, implant, mystical powers, whatever; If you could be instantly and always aware of the time, would you still wear a watch?

It sometimes seems to me that we don't care overly much about the functionality of the watch in some sense. I realize of course that many will but...I suspect even so that a number of people would wear a watch even if they simply "knew" the time.

    I suspect I might.

Computers, phones, wall clocks, radio - we are surrounded by indications of the time constantly but my watch is something I look at for aesthetic pleasure as well as function

You mean, if I spent the vast majority of my time sitting in front of things that all had a clock? Yes, I'd still wear a watch.

Yep, I often look at my watch and don't even take in the time!

Same here. I don't necessarily wear a watch to know what time it is

Perhaps watch makers should start issuing watches that only have an hour hand. And the next one would be without any hands at all. A lovely ceramic painted dial perhaps or something like this?

I think people that wear Richard Mille chronographs have these mysterious powers as you can't tell the time from them

That idea has a certain Zen resonance to it.

If I'm at home, 3 appliances in the kitchen show the time.

For most of the day, sat at a computer the time is visible in the top right of the screen.

In the car, the time is visible on the dash.

When I think about it, the time is usually a glance away for most of my day. I don't need a watch to know the time, it's everywhere.

It's not particularly surprising the answers you get here. You are talking to people who spend 10s-100s of times more than you need to in order to tell the time already...

From what I can see most people have a mobile phone practically glued to them which has the time on and nearly everyone still wears a watch. Watches are highly advertised as fashion items by the Michael Kors of this world and as for a wis - nothing will stop us wearing them :-)

My daughter, who doesn't understand the concept of time yet, would never leave the house without this (the one in the front ):

I was trying to remember that one, I think it is one of the exotic oddities in The Wristwatch Handbook.
