    1970's Moonwatch at Chronomaster

I've been thinking of maybe adding a Speedmaster Professional to the small collection for a few years now, and the one below piqued my interest...

    http://www.chronomaster.co.uk/watche...omega-serviced

Now, apart from the obvious (no box or papers, serviced 9 years ago) what do we think of this example?

Does anyone have any other suggestions of where else to look?

I would particularly like a manual wind example, hesalite etc.

    1970's Moonwatch at Chronomaster

Love the bracelet on it! Description seems quite accurate and even mentions the different shade of the hands. I don't know if they are replacement ones or that they have just faded a different way.
The price seems quite good IMHO

I've been looking at that myself, but the price seems a bit toppy to me. The hands could well be original... they usually have a different shade to the lume in my experience.

Saw this one on the site a few weeks ago. I know that prices have risen but I think it's a bit pricey personally.

I'd rather have a stepped dial, like the one that I stupidly sold at a time when I really wasn't thinking straight.

Looks like a lovely watch and I don't think it is over priced for a 40 year old watch with superb patina on the markers. A second hand newish one is £2.5k+ these days, so £300.00 extra for that true vintage look and original bracelet - seems like small beer to me. Imagine the price difference against recent second hand if this was a Submariner.

I agree on the hands, you rarely see a Speedy with identical patina to the markers. Add on the cost of a service and someone will have an extremely good looking watch.

How much again, says he counting his pennies...

Hands look greenish to me. Or is my monitor?

It certainly ticks some boxes for me, and I keep going back to look!

How much do we reckon a service would be?

I'd go with this assessment plus buying from Neil would give me a lot of confidence.

I've dealt with Neil before, so that aspect doesn't worry me.

I'm not up to speed on the Moonwatch, especially 40 year old ones.

Prices are going up, I am not a expert in these things but this looks good and it will sell at that.

In a year's time, anything of this condition at this price will be considered a bargain..

I agree, based on how the market is progressing.

Certainly watching the market on Vintage Heuer and Rolex watches over the years, is interesting.

    Vintage Speedmasters are very interesting.

It's a lovely watch, and about right price wise.

Ed Whites hitting 12k, no NASA's hitting 6k, Stepped dials 4.5k
Any 70's Speedie under 3k is well priced imho.

I don't want to be picky, but is that bezel insert a gnats chuff misaligned counter clockwise?
    Easily sorted of course though.

Really? Being pessimistic for a minute and assuming it is post '76, how is it any different to a late 80s model? It has likely had the hands and possibly dial changed as it was serviced by Omega themselves in 2008 which can be the kiss of death for originality. It is fairly priced but it could be a collection of service parts. The stated 633 end links were used on the 1171 bracelet all the way from 1970 to ~1990 so that is not really any help either. If it is a straight writing then it is worth a premium but since there is no caseback pic (which seems odd) it is hard to be sure. They do say early '70s which is encouraging but without further checks it may not be so great.

Neil's kindly sent me some extra photos of the caseback and movement.

P.M. me if anyone wants them.

No matter how I try I struggle to see the appeal of a mid-70s version versus the current offering of essentially the same watch . There simply isn't enough difference to justify spending big money on a 40 year old watch when you could buy a nearly new model for a similar price.

I work on old watches , I like 'em for what they are, but I strugle to see the appeal of this one. If the watch had been discontinued 30 years ago I could understand it..........but you local Omega AD is selling virtually the same watch brand new!

    Kings New Clothes syndrome?

As for the prospects of a heavily worn 1171 bracelet?.........definitely not for me. The damned things never fitted the watch properly when new.
