Most reliable free email account that is not gmail

I need a free email account that works well and is reliable, but i dont want Gmail as for me to get a account I will have to use numbers, underscores and all sorts of other characters as all the simple email addresses are long gone.
I dont even mind paying a small fee for something better.

Hotmail? Or outlook as it’s known as these days.

I've had a Hotmail address as my main personal one for twenty years now (amazing when I think that), so have a very good *****@Hotmail.com address.

Microsoft have slowly made it less easy to use, and less well designed over the years, and I do get a lot of spam, but I'm loathe to let it go. It has been reliable at least over two decades.
So clever my foot fell off.

As posted above said mail.com might be a good option as they allow you to select from a whole list of domains (not sure if thats the right word) so i would imagine you would be able to find a simple enough one using an obscure or lesser used domain?

I have had my hotmail account since 1999 and have tried most of the others but still prefer this.

Yahoo is good at removing spam but has funny moments when it’s slow.

Why not just buy a domain and have it hosted on 1and1

I still think that buying your own Domain name, with the associated benefits of personal email accounts, is by far the best way to go. I've used https://www.uk2.net/ for a very long time now, never had a hiccup and it's a very inexpensive solution to the problems of personal and business emails, and webspace if needed...

I second this. My surname is jones, and that pretty means I don’t get much choice without numbers etc. Managed a firstname_lastname@gmx.com which I never though was going to happen for me anywhere.

I have been using it for 4 months with the VPN basic service, so far the experience has been excellent. Hoping to close my gmail account very shortly, just transferring all accounts across to new email address can be time consuming.

If you have an iPhone you have de facto an iCloud account.
I use ProtonMail too and it is excellent. But maybe we don’t define good the same way: if you have a free email it means you are the product.
ProtonMail is big on encryption and privacy. That’s part of what makes it good for me.

My website/domain name is only around 12 quid a year, would it be worth you setting one up for the email address of your choice?

    Thanks for the input.
I have a outlook account but I'm just worried, it's not going to be that reliable as it's free

I think that mass mail campaigns are still an easier method of promotion compared to others. I learned a lot about it from https://www.massmailsoftware.com/bul...s-software.php

Grab a domain for £10 a year, and host it via Gmail for around £40 a year. Easy.

    Gives xxxxx@xxxxxxxx.com not xxxxx@gmail.com

    This ^^^^^

It’s what I do. My email is a gmail account and I have a domain with email hosting and forwarding at names.co.uk.

Costs buttons but gives me firstname@surname.com - which is nice

Unless you've a very unusual surname doubt that's possible nowadays.

Yahoo got hacked a few years ago and loads of people lost access permanently to their accounts

You can do this for approx same price with proton mail and have less worries over data security.

i use an obscure one called mail2web.com i signed up for free and get a limited version for free - but now its 60 day free trial with a $4.95 a month fee

outlook web access as its client - its free though if you want to pay a bit more you can also do domain stuff and mobile phone push emails etc

    https://mail2web.com/business-email

but personally for what you get - I'd go for an office 365 account which (depending on your subscription model) gives you generous onedrive as storage for your documents and emails from Outlook.com - and if a small business - sharepoint included not to mention microsoft teams... for a little bit more per month
