There sure are some crazy anomalies!

You can see why pilots use one standard time for the whole globe. (Zulu time)

To which I'll add: Why is it Called UTC? And "Until 1972, Greenwich Mean Time (also known as Zulu time) was the same as Universal Time (UT). Since then, GMT is no longer a time standard" (link).

Excellent stuff, thanks! I just got back from the Marquesas Islands which, frustratingly, are GMT - 9.5.

Why so frustrating? I took my "go anywhere" Pro Trek with me so I could see local time and UK time, only to find out that it doesn't handle all 40 time zones, only some of them. Not a big deal, I just kept local time displayed as GMT -10, but still a pain having to adjust everything by half an hour after 4 days of travelling....

I'm now keen to see what new GPS watches become available as the technology filters down from blingy flagship models. Pretty sure they handle all the time zones.

    Cheers

    Dave

This was an interesting article. Had no idea about the UTC acronym compromise!
