    Dads seiko

I was just rummaging around in a drawer and I found these 2 seiko pieces.

Anyone got any info on them?

    The Auto is from 1985.

The quartz is from 1981 going by the style.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

I would agree with both of those dates. Both produced in their many thousands and popular at the time. I've got examples of both in my Seiko drawer :)

Polish the cases and get new straps and you've got two very attractive watches

They are both nice watches but the quartz SQ is the better of the 2.

I agree that the quartz has the better-looking case shape but they'd both look very good polished, with polished or replaced crystals, and on decent leather straps.

Where’s the best place to source new crystals for these? And what should I use to polish the cases?

Dont polish the gold plated SQ. Just gently wipe it with soft cloth.

As it comes to crystals mesure the diameter, there is lot of them on bay.

Change the straps and you have two great watches.

Replacing a crystal doesn’t seem that complex? Taking the wonder stem in and out seems the most complex? But in the 7009 I think there’s a tab to release it...

Try polishing the crystal with polywatch or brasso before committing to new ones.

Dont do it unless you have some prior experience in tinkering with watches. Its not just "push the crystal in"

You have to remove the movement, remove the old crystal - watchmakers use special tool, install gaskets, push in new crystal - watchmakers use special press tool, clean it all, blow out the dust..

You will probably end with either fingerprint on inside of crystal, dust on dial, broken or unleveled crystal, stem installed wrong so you will need to disassemble whole watch and tinker with keyless works, you might damage dial...

Been there done that. I just leave the crystal swap to profesional.

If you want to practice, get some 1£ seiko from fleabay. It does not seem right to destroy dads watches.
