Does it need to be a 1968 ?
Only just sold my Sub, and regretting it already. I really am a little clueless with older subs, but wonder how much one of these would cost me?
Advice n direction very much appreciated gents
Not really, only being a little sentimental, ideally yes though
How long is a piece of string - the market is very dependent on too many variables, and one 1968 watch could be worth 3 times that of another 1968 watch.
It's just a matter of time...
Ok, but what type of range? If a peeing in the wind, would be good to know earlier 😀
This may help

Doubt this'll help at all but I sold a 69 metres first 5513 about 2 years ago for 2.5k!
If you do I'll take all of them.
More in 2018 i guess.
This may help too. Don't forget to take into account auction fees of 23%

I still regret it, it was a mistake selling it at that price but heh we've all done it. To make you (and me) feel better about it, it wasn't a perfect dial - it had a strange staining/marking around the minute marker edge. It bugged me and I simply couldn't live with it. Price wasn't helped by the fact I sold it to the trade, simple walk in, checked it out, cash in bank transaction. The case was lovely though!
It's also a reflection on how the market has changed. About the same time I sold a 73 red sub with a perfect dial for £6k something... You wouldn't see that now either would you.
Spend as much as you can afford. Rolex vintage watches can be a bit of a mine field and way out of my level of expertise. However. There are loads of chaps on here that will keep you right.
if you could find me a nice 1680 redsub I'd swap my '67 Meters first 5513 for it....
Who in the forum would you suggest I chat too about getting one ?
Mike Wood? Hayward Milton?...

Your biggest decision when sourcing a vintage Rolex is deciding how much you want to spend on the seller's guarantee of originality and authenticity. If you purchase from a dealer whose expertise and knowledge is widely accepted, then your price will include a substantial 'provenance premium' guaranteeing that the watch you purchased is in a wholly original state. Hodinkee had a couple of 5513s listed for $8200 (1967) and $8500 (1973). Obviously, condition will vary for each watch available and that will be reflected in the price. But I guess those numbers would be a rough estimate for you to compare with any specimens you are considering? I have always shied away from vintage Rolex simply because of the risk of buying something that turns out to be 'not quite right'.
Roguishly...
I forgot to add that this site:
seems like a good starting point for validating any 1960's vintage 5513

I have a '69 ft first with virtually all as it should be, hands dial pip and the most amazing grey faded insert. Case is pretty much untouched no B&P but age related C&I riveted bracelet.
It is worth £6k to me in my eyes as a guide. I could be way out though.
For me it doesn't get a whole lot better than a Matt 5513 in the sub world, proper DNA and the hunt will be exciting, trust me.
Enjoy

A good barometer is to search 5513 on eBay for a global indication if whats out there, more interesting to search 1680 Red as a comparison. 5513 is a cool watch though

I can see the massive variant in price now too

There was a 68 on SC today - went in a minute I think

Buy the seller with these things is my only advice.
Can I ask you fine gents to send me a pm if you see a 1968 5513 please - thanks all
Some of the shops in Burlington Arcade had some nice old 5513's in this morning. Not sure if they had any '68s, as I was in a rush, but might be worth a visit.
Here's my 5513 meters first from 1968. No idea what it would command - bracelet and crown are later replacements. But I love the dial, hands and slightly faded bezel insert - would this be original to this watch? Experts here may be able to advise.
OP: good luck with your search.

My search is for a 1965 5513 :-(
I suspect that the original poster and I are the same age.
I bought myself a 1968 1675 GMT Master form Sales Corner on here several years ago. I have been wondering where I could go to get an evaluation for it from a vintage Rolex expert in London. I say an evaluation rather than valuation because I would be interested to find out what, if anything, had been replaced and what is original e.g. dial, hands bezels, bracelet etc rather than just a valuation for insurance purposes. This is no reflection of its previous owners (at least two members of this forum owned it before me), as I said I bought it many years ago and am very happy with it. Since I have owned it I have had it serviced by Duncan at Genesis.
Is there a London equivalent of Mike Wood or Hayward Milton? Naturally I would expect to pay the going rate for the time of an expert in this field.
Same search for me too this year. Sub or GMT the watch of choice and looking forward to the journey in finding one that works for me.
Will do, saw your Hulk and GMT on the SC, nice watches.
I think the pertina on the older watches look great. Saw one 1965 watch for sale but glad the seller was honest as it had a different dial and the hands had been changed.
The seller stated the dail was from a 5512 watch and the hands looked newer than the rest so looked out of place to my eye.
