    Blocked ears, Grrrrr.

Very annoying. Have not been able to hear much for 2 weeks. Went docs a week ago and told me I have to use olive oil with sodium bicarbonate drops for 3 weeks before he will think about syringe.

I'm going to have to go back earlier as its driving me nuts. Got a permanent hissing sound going on and my own voice is amplified in my head.

    Do it yourself.

I had and the same - the next nurse appointment was 2 months away.
    It was driving me nuts.
So I got a syringe and used warm tap water in the evenings after treating with oil in the morning.
Gently at first, then I used short bursts to clear it up.
    Worked a treat.
By the time I saw the nurse she said there was nothing further to do.

However, do not do it if you have perforated eardrums.

I Gave them a swill with the shower head tonight but didn't achieve anything. The oil seems to be softening the one side but not the other. Might have to get myself a syringe then and give it go.

Aye if you've been using oil already for a few days then get a bulb syringe and gentle squirt of warm water may do the trick.

Just be patient - it took me over a week with that routine.

Better than waiting 2 months though !

I had that issue a couple of years ago. Got Liz to put a few drops of olive oil in each lug for 3 days and a few days later it loosened and all came out.. job done.

It works better if you heat the olive oil. Obviously not to frying temperatures

There's some mighty fine earwax removal videos on youtube.

    I love stuff like that

If you're near London, go see these people http://clearearclinic.com/
They'll sort it straight away. Have been a few times myself due to having permanently perforated ear drums, it's the same treatment you'd get going to see an ENT.

Several years ago, I used to remove wax (and other things) from ears as part of my job. Did it via the microsuction mentioned in the above link which does work well however the wax has to be at least a bit soft first! Olive oil does work well and you can often rinse it out yourself once it is soft enough.

Missed a trick by not charging £85 a time though...

"permanently perforated ear drums" sounds uncomfortable. Why do they not heal and cant you have surgery for this?

They do but it depends on the size of the perforation and the condition of the rest of the middle/external ear. You can have surgery. No experience personally but not sure that it is that painful except in the early period but there is a long term effect on hearing with a large perforation.

    Blocked ears, Grrrrr.

Find Earex drops work much better than olive oil. Releases oxygen bubbles, helps break the wax.

Get one of these after using ear drops for a week... https://www.google.co.uk/aclk?sa=L&a...Qwg8IHg&adurl=

I was horrified with what came out of mine after 10 minutes of squirting warm water in!

I've used earex, warm water in a syringe and warm oil - all worked, but slowly.
The quickest solution was the other half with a torch, a big hair grip and a steady hand!

For goodness sake don't poke objects into your ears, not even cotton buds!

There is delicate tissue in there and you could make matters worse by pushing hardened wax further down so that it becomes increasingly impacted

Oil, warm water and some slight pressure from a syringe or bulb is all that should be going in there

    On a related theme

If only this chap had known that all he had to do was fill his ear with warm water and the offending insect would have come to the surface after a time.....

    That story is horrific!

OP - Earex sell a kit with the drops and a syringe. A few days of the drops then use the syringe and all will be well.

Warm olive oil once/day will soften the wax, after a few days it should start coming away naturally. Pouring earm water in the ear can help, but don't make it too hot.

My Nan had a saying, don't put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow, ridiculous really but in reality completely correct advice. I've been a qualified nurse for nearly 30 years and still stick to that mantra.

Yes use ear drops and warm compresses externally to soften the wax but sticking anything in your ear canal is asking for a perforation and problems down the line.

This is brilliant for removal https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Ear-Irrit...emoval+syringe much better than the bulb sort. But use drops to soften and make sure it is only wax and not an infection

2 months !! Flipping eck, with this problem I grab my national health insurance card, and then tell everyone in the office I'll be back in 30 mins and wander down the road 200yds to the ear/nose/throat clinic. hand the card and ~2 pounds over to the receptionist and take a seat, usually get called in less than 5mins and see the chap straight away. He uses his vacuum thingy and I pick up some drops from the reception on the way out. Back at my desk within 30mins - no booking, 2 pounds and job done.

If it's a weekend then the chap local to our place is around 500yds away and opens on Sat mornings and it a 10-20 mins wait to be seen - same price. With stories of 2 months wait its easy to explain to my folks why I won't be coming back to live in the UK soon.

No gloating - just trying to put things into context, for something this simple it should be in and out and seen to same day.

I used to go to the GP surgery every couple of years for a syringe but for the past 10 years I have gone down the DIY route with oil, warm water and a bulb or syringe.

Warm olive oil, gentle bulb syringe and patience, as has been said above. Regular swimming helps to keep your ears clear.

Just to add, I use a bulb like the Macks wax away as posted above. Probably more controlled that the syringe, but you need to get all the air bubbles out or you'll regret it!

As did I but the GP stopped offering it as a service years ago. So no choice but to self administer. I normally use the bulb and Earex combo and it works fine. The last time I had to get the syringe I posted previously and it was very effective and safer than the bulb as you can't insert it too far.

Looks like earex and that aculife syringe looks a good bet. Meanwhile I'll keep chucking the oil in 4 times a day.

Back in 1980, I started teaching at a school for deaf children. As a part of the 'training on the job', I had to follow lessons from an E.N.T. specialist (doctor) at the local hospital. One afternoon an older man and lady came in. The man had the same problems the OP talked about. Same advise: "...use some oil and come back next week!" So they did. Next week, same time (so I was there too), the man walked in with a compress tied around his head and a sorts of nasty, smelly stuff appeared when I had removed the compress... Totally disgusting. The doctor asked what had happened. The woman answered: "We didn't have any oil, but we had mayonaise in the fridge, so that's what we have used this week...!"

Honestly, it did work! The doctor had cleaned out the guy's ears in no time.

Ive not used these folks as yet, but will probably do so at some point soon.

I had an ear issue and was referred to the ENT department at my local hospital. The doc used an amazing machine to hoover out my ear. It was a tiny suction tube with a micro camera on the end, so we could both see exactly what was being sucked up on the big TV screen.

I remember leaving and thinking how you'd make a fortune offering that service on the high street. So I had a google and found that there are already loads of places doing it. Not just the one in London at £85!

I think most of them will give you a hoover out for £40 or £50, which seems very reasonable for an immediate fix and not having to spend days bunging olive oil down your lug holes!

Anyone been to one of these places?

Nope. Their "vaccum cleaner" has a tiny head that just sucks everything up that you point it at. Obviously need to be done by a trained professional with a steady hand, but it will suck out the hardest of hard bits.

In which case this sounds like a far better solution. Having oil in your ears for a week is damn nuisance

Same saying in my family for years.

I did however remove a peanut stuck in my son's ear by pouring in a small amount of warmed liquid chocolate. It came out a Treet.

A few years ago I went completely deaf in one ear due to a blockage. It was infuriating and i got impatient and overdid the Earex inasmuch as I probably used it 5-10 times as frequently as indicated. The vegetable oil and bicarbonate solutions were too slow-acting for me so I went for the peroxide. The bubbling made it really seem like something was happening and it soon becomes addictive. I then used the bulb syringe to clear out the wax whilst in the bath. The amount and consistency of the stuff that came out of both ears was disgusting. Unfortunately I then developed an outer ear infection, which was excruciatingly painful. It felt like a bad toothache and I certainly wouldn't want an inner ear infection (labyrinthitis). I was convinced that oral antibiotics would be required, but the doctor prescribed an ear spray that contained an antibiotic and a steroid for the inflammation. I wasn't convinced, but it worked really well.

Went out for the day today and could hardly hear a thing. Really got on my t!t$ today so went into boots and found they sold the aculife syringe for £5.99. As soon as i got home i went straight upstairs, filled a cup with warm water and whipped my syringe out. I can happily say two squirts in both ears and voila! i can hear again.

Im not sure if its all out as i was expecting to see more wax but i can hear (all be it a bit tinny) now and it feels great. Them syringes are brilliant and will give them a clean out once a month from now on.

You will hear surprisingly well, even when the ear canal is almost completely blocked. However, once the canal is totally blocked, it's very difficult to hear, especially if there is water trapped behind it.

Sorry, have I missed something? The NHS provides this service. Why does anyone need to resort to DIY or private?
All you need to do is see your GP and he can refer you to get your ears syringed!

Yes, that is what I meant. Nurses are trained to do these "procedures" provided they are straightforward. Any previous ear problems and that goes to specialists. Nurses in the surgery use syringing - like getting your car washed, lots of water washes out the ear. With specialists they use microsuctioning which is like hoovering the ear-they suck it out. For both ear wax has to be soft. After 5 Ballantines these are the only analogies that came to mind!

The surgery that I used to use when I lived in Reading stopped offering this service - which is what prompted me to start doing my own. Must have been about 2004 I think.

Mind you I am fortunate in the respect that my wife is a retired ENT Nurse so she can supervise things when needed.
