    Doris... 2017 4th storm.

I think that the next 2017 storm is called Doris. That name thing doesn't really work here on the Continent (at least here). For us it's only the second on our shores this year. What we know is that it's going to be a heavy one. Forecast tell us that it will be record braking wind gusts especially inland and that it will take only a few hours. Even 150 kms from the coast - inland, where I live- the forecast shows windspeed up to 100 kms/hr in gusts. That's very strong for this region.

We're expected to have 70mph - 80mph for short periods. Being on the coast with nothing between my house and the sea I can believe it. It's currently too loud to conduct a call in my home office due to the wind picking up and reverberating the window surrounds!

The naming thing is a little silly I agree.

Actually the worst storm I've ever experienced was last year when I was in the Netherlands. Cycling from Delft to Rijswijk soaking wet and in fear of being struck by lightning.

The next one will be male, and start with E. The one after will be female and start with F.
Storm Katie wrecked my roof and conservatory last year, and reminded me of a couple of Katies I had dated years ago......
I wonder how many chaps will remember the same about Doris?

What's this strict alternating Male/Female naming convention? In these modern times should we not have a more inclusive naming system?

I was in Florida when Hurricane Charley went right over the top of us in 2004.

Sounded like an express train coming in, and then just a deafening roar, while it ripped the roof off the hotel.

    It was quite an experience.
So clever my foot fell off.

Not looking forward to Doris tomorrow, I am on the north wales coast, and am due to go up into the hills around Dolgarrog .

i know it's rough, but I guess we have it easy compared to the Caribbean/Hawaiian islands/ the US.

German Meteo calls this storm Thomas. (not confusing, no...)

My wife stays at home and suggested to her co-workers / employees to do the same because Dutch Transit cuts services. Most of her colleagues come to Amsterdam by train... Grinding halt, is the term, I think.

Best ask the Yanks that one (link):

The less common letters Q, U, X, Y and Z will not be used, which keeps the UK and Ireland in line with the US hurricane warning system.

The storm names are relevant to UK and Ireland only, European meteorological offices will have their own storm name systems in place.

Both the UK & Irish met offices get together each year and agree names (that are supposedly relevant ti UK & Ireland only) hence some Irish names are in place...

About this time last year we were heading into our 10th storm of the year (Storm Jake) ... so far this year just 4 storms .... been a quiet winter

Due to the amount of money London subsidises the rest of the country with we have been granted an exemption from this storm, so it's business as usual. The storm will just affect poor people and Northerners (same thing) which everyone will agree is a bit of a relief.

The commute down the A1 from Peterborough to Hitchin was interesting this morning.

There was a discussion about names on R4 on my way in... apparently naming the storms has seen a dramatic increase in awareness of possible dangerous conditions on social media so it is actually a good thing.

Not looking forward to the journey home later.

BTW the next one is called Euan

    Make that Ewan.

Or, if you're in Germany, Udo or Volkmar or Wilfried or Xaver or Yannik or Zeus...depending on how many they name (link).

Now, that is funny in a certain way.

Things are still quiet here. Wind is picking up a little. Later today, the park next to my house will be closed off. Some trees are over 100 y/o and previous storms have shown that not all trees can stand the wind.

Bit of a nightmare in the North West earlier. I was on the M6 when it got shut and after three hours trying to circumvent the Thellwall Viaduct (along with every other person on the M6) I gave up and headed for home. A 2 hour return journey took almost 6 after I aborted. Debris and chaos everywhere. Much as I was frustrated I heard on the radio that a woman was killed in Wolverhampton by falling debris so a delayed and aborted journey is nothing. Stay safe everyone.

    Wow!

The park next to my house is closed now. Tomorrow enough fallen branches to be cut. Thus far, enough to fill a truck. As my neighbour put it: 'the sound of Stihl tomorrow'. The wind doesn't blow the trees over the road; the road is on the western side of the park. So the trees fall onto the grass.

Did you even notice that a lot of fallen trees and or lost roof tiles are not from the side with the direct wind, but at the 'leeward' side? As if there's a vacuum that sucks trees and roof tiles.
In Holland, modern roofs with modern roof tiles have to be interconnected (per 6) and need to be screwed onto the roof. The tiles have a tiny hole for a woodscrew. Modern houses rarely loose their roof tiles. In some towns like Haarlem and Amsterdam, there are houses with a special styled roof:

These houses were built in the late 20s. Roof tiles were cheaper than bricks back then ('29 economic crisis). Nowadays, most tiles have been renewed and are screwed onto the roof. But I remember the time as a young lad when a storm caused more or less a 'snow storm' of falling tiles...

I think we got off lightly here. Had some squaley rain and wind at 2pm but nothing like a storm! The barometer pressure's going up now.

Several local roads closed due to fallen trees today. Wind gusting strong, hail and sideways rain.

I heard some sickening noises from the roof around 6PM. Too dark and to windy to have a look. Wind is dying down and the rain has almost stopped. Tomorrow a quick check through the Velux roof windows will tell me more
