Gold Sub, end game advice sought

There is an interesting thread for me further down the home page, but in the interests of selfies and self-validation and other fashionable crap, I thought I'd start my own thread based on me maybe buying big this week as I am on the verge of completing a deal for a 116618LB. I have thought about posting for some advice on here and I have asked a couple of senior members for advice. Not being fussy, just properly cautious in a Due Diligence type of way. The story is as follows:

First off, I love yellow gold. I just do, it's visceral for me I think. There is just something about precious metal that clicks with me. So, I have had a 116613LB for 7 years and it was always my dream watch. It has never dropped time or done anything else other than perform superbly. I adore the TT balance, simply adore it. So, a few years ago I got to try on the full gold and decided it was daft, far too much and OTT. Then it kept coming back in my head and back in November I emailed my local dealer, with whom I have a good relationship, went to see them and discussed the yellow and white gold Submariners and likely trade in values for a couple I had the green light to trade. Last week, he emailed me and said they had one in for me to see, so I went. That took about 3 months for them to get one, but I am not sure they thought I was totally into making a deal. They are now. My plan was to go and 'rule it out' as it was almost certainly going to be as OTT as I previously thought. Mistake. It so is not.

I found it to be staggering. Other than my rabbits (!) and my baby daughter back in the day, I've never held a thing of such beauty. Yes, it's a watch. Some watch though. The sunburst blue on that heft of yellow loveliness just blew me away. I said I'd go and reflect, shaking my head as I departed the store knowing I had just handled watch porn...real filth, I can tell you. My wife has kindly agreed to me using her 14060M with my TT as makeweights in a deal and as I type, Haywood is looking at the deal for me, which is a superb help. He has a keenly priced 116618LB if anyone is also looking. The non-date doesn't get the wrist time as she now rotates between a Hulk and a Batman we bought new last March on my belief that they were highly investable, a hunch that was hardly a genius call but is already looking like top grade business. For me, the newer ceramics blow the older models away, but I get the alternative view too, sure.

So, yesterday, I asked the AD to refresh me with details of the deal and he responded within minutes, lobbing another £500 into the mix for goodwill...a move that suddenly makes it all look 'on'. The traded watches will need a service in the next year or two, so I am basically thinking I will go and pick it up tomorrow or Tuesday.

Just thinking about the other thread, have tried on a Pepsi WG and found it to be really substantial. Once on, there is no mistaking white gold for steel, the weight is crazy but wonderful. I love the original blue and red contrast on the Pepsi but I wasn't overly smitten by the bigger one. The AD reckons Rolex haven't sold that many...his words, not mine. The Blue Sub, the white gold, is fabulous and the blue really pops.

My wife tends to wear the other pair on a month by month rotation, so I get the use of either a Hulk or Batman as a daily wearer, whichever one she isn't wearing. The non-date is rattly in comparison, very nice and iconic and all that, but is the poorer cousin in the watch box. Adding a blue gold Sub is thus an 'obvious' move. I'd value any thoughts. A couple of pictures, dreadful pictures indeed, from the other day:

I've gone back and forth a bit, not out of uncertainty on the gold Sub, more about letting my TT go. I can get another though, but I doubt the new one will fail, somehow.

Kind regards,

Michael.

I really enjoyed reading your post, go for it I say, it really is something you sound passionate about.

I really like the way the blue dial pops and there is something very special about the yellow gold watch IMO

Good luck with what ever you decide but I would go for it.

:)

If gold is your thing (which it obviously is) then may as well go all in. The two tones don't do it for me anyway.

My thoughts too about going all-in. Thanks.

You sound so passionate about the watch that it seems inevitable to me. Sounds like you've got to try it to get it out of your system, or it'll haunt you for a long time.

Michael I am so on your wavelength!!!
I too would still have the 'bluesy' and a 'Hulk' as optional daily wearers if I do 'go gold' and exactly the same as you, it was the two-tones that started me looking.

Mate I absolutely salute you and I so hope you get whichever watch you decide on!!

Go for the 116618, there's nothing that comes close to the feel of a real gold watch IMO!

If the price is right, then go for it. I'd prefer a gold case, than a gold bezel on a steel case if it's not too crazy price wise.
It's just a matter of time...

From reading your post and the views you have posted - I think a Yellow gold Submariner is the right choice for you

I actually like the 2 toned but then it seems you are really in love and have no issues letting a watch that you have worn for 7 years go so I would say go for it.

Go for it!!

If you have the balls to wear a full gold Sub I would say go for it as they are a thing of beauty but not many could get away with wearing one, me included?!?!
I think if I was as passionate as you are about it the deal would have already been done and it will definately be one of those special watches!!! Not really anywhere else to go on the gold front once you have it so you can then move on to the next precious metal!!
Good luck and let us know!!

Chris

Get it!!!!

PM watches always feel that bit more special.

I recently gutted my watch collection for a moving fund, but also have treated myself to one good watch, its all gold

It is clear from the way you wrote the OP that this is the right move for you, all you need to do is make sure you are happy with the drtails of the deal.
It's great to read an enthusiast homing in on something he has a great enthusiasm for.

Thursday morning. Something is a-coming...

You know what, I'm tempted to do one of those daft You Tube videos and unbox it slowly...whatever 'it' is. Do a really smarmy one maybe and start it with...,'Hi guys...' Yes, I'm going to do it. I'll start a new thread as well and be greedy...and...and...and...

Thursday it is then. Now, where's that thread about the demise of MCFC...

A thing of pure beauty!!! Don't get me wrong the TT is also a great looking watch but an all gold Rolex when spotted in the wilds still has that 'Wow' effect on me.
Just be confident when on wrist and don't let the watch wear you!!! ;-)

Great choice!!!

End game indeed. Debenhams won't add it to my home insurance because of value...I have 5 Rolexes with them...sod it. I got a quote from some clown company called Assetsure...£834 per year. Hilarious, well done to them. Forget it then, I'll stick to what I have and enjoy them. Slightly gutted.

That would be a rotten reason not to buy any watch! Possibly try the team at T.H.March, but I think they ask about 1.5% of the insured value in premium each year and there would be requirements for the storage of watches not on your wrist. I can provide contacts there if you need.

Time to find a new insurer! There have been other threads on the subject but we're with John Lewis and they cover everything we have, including a £10k+ ring of my wife's without any addional premium. Our overall coverage level is quite high but is very reasonably priced compared to other high value policies.

A contact would be good Haywood. I'll try John Lewis, again thanks. Hiscox couldn't do it. I'm really puzzled.

Tried the T.H. March online quote. A snip at over £900. I mean, I'm hardly going to do that. I think it's game over. Oh well. I simply never considered the insurance angle at all. Naive or what?

That's a real shame actually. Is there nothing the AD could do to help you, perhaps as part of the deal ?

I'm still trying various places. The AD are really good but other than suggesting T.H. March, not really much they can do I suppose. We have a safe, we are working professionals, we have 1 claim in 20 years, alarmed house in a nice area...I dunno, I'm stumped. Also, trading 2 watches off the policy at around £14k...so not really adding a huge chunk to the policy. Crazy.

Are you just asking these guys to cover the watch or give a whole contents insurance quote. If the former I think you'll keep struggling, if the latter I'm sure you'll find something much more viable.

Hey, cheers! Insurance? Just argued the toss, emailed the CEO. Stood firm. Had to pay a small premium but it worked out.

Feel? Amazing. Staggering watch. I'll post some decent pics tomorrow.
