PRS-29b - Changes

Evening all,
I have seen a few posts mentioning the second batch of the PRS-29b and referring to changes in the make up, but I can't find any reference to what (if any) changes were made in the second run.

Can anyone enlighten me?

First 200 had a double dome crystal, replaced by flatter Bombe crystal on later version due to production costs.

As I see it, the old version has more of a constant radius across the crystal (hesalite?), whereas the newer version has a flatter surface over the majority of the crystal. Is that correct?

Is the first incarnation the closest to the original?

I think the PRS-29A is the closest to the original as it is the same size and has an acrylic crystal, with fixed strap bars. The 29B was a modernised version with lug holes, 39mm diameter and sapphire - both 29Bs had/have sapphire crystal. The newer version is not doubled domed which may be the effect you're seeing on my version.

Thanks Dave, Eddie describes it as a "Bombé sapphire" which I always thought was a type of gin. ;)

I am thinking of fitting a plexy domed crystal to the newer version to get a more original look. Has anybody done something similar?

It would need to have an internal tension ring in order to fit.
