    New York tourist tips

    Hi All,

Off to New York on Wednesday, this will be my 4th time so i've done the usual sights etc...

So, I'm thinking what can i do that is not the normal touristy stuff? I do that anyway so looking for more unusual suggestions.

Any and all ideas welcome, I'll likely have done a couple but still grateful for any pointers.

    Thanks in advance,

    Glenn

Perhaps best to list a few of the places you've been to.

    Anyway...

    • USS Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in the Hudson River is a nice one - if you're into this sort of stuff.
    • Coney Island - but perhaps a littel cold these days.
    • The Tenement Museum - about the lifes of immigrants
    • MoMa - no further introduction
    • Grand Central's Oyster Bar
    • The New York Transit Museum

    Just to name a few.

EDIT: almost forgot: the Museum of Moving Image in Queens: about TV and film. When my wife visited the museum there was a large Braking Bad display - I am not sure that's part of the standard collection or if it was a temporary display.

What about a SpeakEasy tour? These tours seem to be highly recommended http://www.alexstours.com/walking-tours/

Chelsea Market is a good place to visit whilst on the Highline, lots of nice bars and restaurants...

Might be too late to book now, but these guys are excellent: locals showing you around their own neighbourhoods, so you get to see some great places with some real local insight.

    Oh, and it was free.

There's also a high rise cable car (like the one over the Thames from the Excel to Greenwich) from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island in the East River.

The suggestion about doing a trip to CT or even a trip up NY State sounds interesting as well. Even a few hrs to the north brings you in a total different 'world' with lots of nature, large homes etc

    +1 for:
The Tenement Museum (and lunch/brunch at Russ & Daughters).
MoMA an the new MoMA PS1 in Queens.
NY Transit Museum, take the free guided tour well worth it.
Museum of the Moving Image, regular guest exhibitions, their Mad Men one was brilliant.
    PLUS
    If you're there on a Saturday:Smorgasburg
    If you're there on a Sunday:Brooklynflea
If you do the Highlife, you need to do Chelsea Market, trendy place to eat & shop nearby.
If you want a fantastic meal: The Gramercy Tavern.

I really enjoyed a night in Greenwich Village, few beers in a craft beer bar, great pizza in the pub next door and then a night in the comedy club.

Go to Greenwich Village at night. When you’re there have a sit around in Washington Square Park for a bit.

Go to Coney Island during the day. Ride the old Cyclone roller coaster. Hot dogs at Nathan’s, booze at Rudy’s (if they're open at the moment). Walk along to Brighton Beach.

Take the East River Ferry to Dumbo and have pizza at Grimaldi’s.

Take the L Train to Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and have a meal and a drink. Young, lively, safe area.

Have a drink at Jimmy’s Corner, near Times Square (friendly locals, cheap beer).

He hasn't posted since the 16th. Perhaps he's detained in immigration at JFK?
