Probably best to say hello :-)

So first of all hi guys!

I'm a newbie to watches here, in my younger days I thought armani and DKNY were good watches.

I'd never really heard of omega, breitling but I had heard of Rolex and knew they were well out of my price range!

Anyway, up u til two years ago, I had about 6 watches which were an old sekonda I bought years ago, a Casio for £15 (gym use) and some other watches, mainly citizen and accurist (all Argos specials).

But 2 years ago I bought my first Seiko an skx007, absolutely loved the quality and feel apart from the fact it feels a little small for my wrist as I'm a fatty.

Last year I bought an orient mako XL in blue, put a red and blue NATO on it and it's great. I always go back to my skx as it feels nicer though.

In march my birthday is coming up and probably looking to buy another watch so thought I'd get clued up properly before spending some cash.

P.s. I'm using Tapatalk so can't see all the forum features, is there a glossary for the acronyms etc?

What does SOTC mean? Oh and what's the difference between a Kermit and a hulk?

Welcome! The SKX007 and Mako XL are good choices. :-)

I think there was once a post that explained them all but it's not been kept up to date. You'll pick up the terms quickly enough.

SOTC = State Of The Collection.

I'll leave the Rolex definition to someone more familiar with them. Despite being a Seiko fan, I have difficulty remembering all the Seiko nicknames!

I use Tapatalk too, never noticed I'm missing out!
There's probably a glossary somewhere - SOTC = State Of The Collection so get us some pictures!

I know that a Kermit is a Rolex Sub with a black dial and a green bezel, whereas a Hulk is a Rolex Sub with both dial and bezel in green. Someone will be along shortly who will know all the details, I'm sure!

Welcome to the forum - I've been a member here for years and it's been both fun and an education.

Oh, and before anyone else says it... it's been quite expensive, too!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Just been searching the forum about Tudor watches. What does ETA stand for?

ETA is a Swiss movement manufacturer, part of the Swatch group (who also own Omega, Longines, Tissot, and many others).

    Hello and welcome.

ETA isn't an acronym, it's a company that manufactures watch movements. They're owned by the Swatch group and supply (or supplied) complete movements to many other watch brands.

    Welcome!

ETA are the biggest manufacturer of Swiss mechanical watch movements. If the watch says 'swiss made' on it then the chances are that it's an ETA in there. (Until you get into the world of in-house movements, but that's a bigger conversation).

Their Wikipedia page should give you more info: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ETA_SA

Cheers for the link guys, looking at it as we speak.

Just speaking to my colleague who picked up a Chris Ward Trident Pro last year, it's got the ChrWard logo but feels solidly made and quite weighty too!

He paid £450 for itb- not sure if thAt is reasonable or not but it has caught my eye.

Will be looking up Chris ward I think.

The CW sale is now on with 50% off some of their Tridents so these are looking good value to me. That said, I am currently saving up for something special so will not be purchasing but I was very tempted.

I've just signed up to their newsletter.

I really liked the trident GMT with the dark red bezel which they have a picture of but none for sale.

I also like the black face black bezel GMT but that's too similar to my skx.

Then I get thinking about the new pepsi paid turtle.....

Some say that he chews coal and excretes diamonds. All we know is he’s called Eddie and is our host, designer and purveyor of fine timepieces. http://www.timefactors.com/contact.htm

Yes, the world would be boring if we all liked the same thing.

    Great. Well made, look good.

They are clearly a homage to the Rolex Submariner but differ in a couple of ways: Much larger than the Sub and completely different in side elevation.

If you really want a Rolex Sub then save up, no matter how long it takes, and get one (or a Tudor Sub perhaps). But if you like the Ocean 1 in its own right then don't hesitate to get one -- you'll like it. Check out the Ocean 2 and the Ocean 44 as well.

Even if I could afford one I probably wouldn't buy a Rolex, I'd be happy with a planet ocean.

However that being said the Ocean 1's do look pretty solid and I do like the design, homage or not.

Not keen on the 44. Will check out the 2's

I have a colleague who wore that very watch last week. He seemed very happy with it but eventually admitted he was struggling to tell the time on it. It's heavy but weirdly the bracelet feels flimsy. Not my thing but if it floats your boat and all that.

    I think they're a great starter watch.
    I got married in one!
It's tucked away in a drawer now, I'd never sell it because of the history, but I don't really wear it since I got a Tudor sub.

Mil sub = A Rolex Submariner issued to military forces, mainly British I believe. There's an article here (picked at random): http://gearpatrol.com/2014/03/18/ico...ry-submariner/

Sub DNA = Not sure, where was this? "Sub ND" is the Submariner without a date, i.e. "no date".

DSSD = As Akajak said, this is the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Deapsea Sea-Dweller.

I think Sub DNA might refer to watches that have a passing resemblance to the Rolex Submariner? There are a few.
