    'Everyone should have one'

Less than a year since this watch bug bit and I'm having the inevitable clear-out – thinning down a bit to discount a few rash purchases made early on. Thoughts turn to rebuilding the collection properly (maybe digging a little deeper into the pocket) and more than one person has mentioned a watch that everyone should own.

The first time this happened the context was Seiko SKX007. The second a CWC G10. So I'm wondering where else this goes – and how my wishlist might change as I find out.

What else should I be considering?

I think peoples budgets will reflect what they should have. My one would be the SD4K without a doubt but everyone who can should try Rolex befor they comment or criticize...

Budget permitting, a 2254.50, and another vote for moonwatch. The Omega one.

Just to be awkward, I don't agree at all. 'Everyone' shouldn't have one of any watch as everyone is not the same. Many times I've thought I should try a skx007, but each time I can't quite bring myself to as I just don't really like the look. I know it'd be a good watch, but just not for me. I may still end up trying one some day.

If I ever own a speedy or a Rolex it'll be years off, once my kids move out and start fending for themselves.

I very sensibly restricted my Everyone Should Have One experiment to a £50 G10. It wasn't for me, and it wasn't hard to sell. I don't regret doing it - net cost was only a cheap strap and postage, and in return I learnt that my tastes really do need to be left to gently discover their own path.

Good watches but I am seeing them for £150+ on auction sites now.

No way I'd pay that for a £40 Argos special.

For me everyone should have a G-Shock and a Seamaster.
I have others but these two cover all bases for little outgoing.

Excellent food for thought. And google too, as a few are new to me.

I agree about the 'everyone' bit. I keep turning away from the Seiko 007 because I don't have the wrists for a 43mm case. A shame as I like divers, but possibly not one for my list...

Very well phrased Sir. I'd go two in slightly different price brackets; an all-original Seiko 6309-7040 as it's the ultimate diver with excellent pedigree and a CWC G10 for its utilitarian nature and awesome simplicity.

Are they really? Bloody hell. Great watches mind you and I reckon if they were £140 new, I still would have bought one.

There are a few more mid sized divers out there, tho they tend to be dressy rather than a tool watch. Perhaps a everyone should try an orient mako! That's a diver that surprised me and I will always have a soft spot for them. Tried a longines hydroconquest but didn't bond as well. This watch lark is a strange game, sometimes you are pleasantly surprised by the unexpected.

I think that everyone's collection should include at least one Vostok and Seiko. In house movements, cheap to buy and high quality.

There is a 38mm version of 007 (possibly 013?). I have very slim wrists at 6 inches and wear a 007 now as my daily and it's perfect. It does not wear that big in opinion.

Yes 013 is the smaller version

An excellent watch - this is my old one.

    6.75" wrist

Funny, I have a couple of Orient divers, my favourite is the 2ER on the left (at 40mm I can just carry it off and it wears better now I've put it back on its original bracelet):

That 013 is now on the list, for sure. Also bookmarked (so far):

    CWC
Seamaster (I've been hankering after a 60s one for a while)
    Vostok
    Datejust (might take some saving)

    Still researching, mind...

    Speedy for sure
Surprised no one has mentioned the GMT Master - the 'one' dual time watch IMO - and top of my list for 2017

As said, really depends on budget. But my list would include

    G Shock 5600
    SKX007
    Rolex Sea Dweller
    Speedy Pro
    Patek Nautilus
    AP Royal Oak
    Gold Day Date

Unfortunately my budget doesn't stretch to own a lot of my 'must own' list!

Having a list of desirables or icons is fine but doesn't mean everyone needs one.
Don't assume the responsibility of thinking for others, even though many here like to.
Which is usally people incapable of independent thinking

    Who knows!?!?

To be honest I think it's inevitable that you will purchase a Rolex Sub at some point just because they are iconic and you really should own one at some point at least even if it's just to get it out of your system?!? For me Ive had a few and settled on the 16610 as an everyday Sub but in all reality as you get deeper into it you will just find maybe a manufacturer you like or a specific style you like whether that's chronos or divers etc etc is anyone's guess??
This place helps loads as I've now owned a lot that maybe I would have stayed away from if it wasn't for everyone here?!?
I know once I had started to look at old pilots watches or chronos with all the subdials that was it for me ?
Try a Sub to get it out of your system but definitely have a go at a Speedy as they are stunning although with all the pitfalls on the vintage Rolex and Speedy offerings I would steer clear without some great advice ?

Good luck with whatever you get!

    Chris

My list is incredibly close to this! Haven't ticked off the Vostok or the Date Just (although an Air King is close) but apart from that I'm with the above and I'd swap your Vostok for a CWC RN Diver....and perhaps throw in a Breitling

Surprised at all the vostok votes it's a brand I know little about. I was never a fan of the skx but decided to pull the trigger after my g shock started misting up under the crystal. It's a nicer watch in person and for a beater it fits the bill perfectly.

2 watches need to figure on everybody's collection irrespective of financial means: some Seiko Divers 200, prefeablu an SKX007/009 and a classic Casio G-Shock, such as GW M5610.

For people with more savings, a Rolex Submariner of course. Or any Sea Dweller.

There are many iconic watches, but for me those 3 should be on every list.

I'd support this, got mine for £42 and it has been excellent as a cycling watch.

I liked it so much I got a Smiths W10 as well.

Speedmaster a timeless piece, although not literally :-)

Relative to the high street experience, online shopping offers bewildering choice. Purchases get made without the benefit of handling and it’s effortless shopping. Forums provide advice of unverifiable objectivity and value, between people who know nothing about each other. So mistakes will get made, but Hey Ho, you can always flip.

So “Everyone Should Have” might make some sense as a time saving risk reduction strategy, at first anyhow.
Beyond that I dislike the idea. Making mistakes is vital to learning, particularly if they turn out not to be mistakes after all. And my most pleasing purchases have been the longshots which came off.

Unless you need a readily identifiable status symbol, and I’m not knocking that as a motive, I still can’t get my head around why ‘popular choice’ is a compliment. We all like to think we are individuals don’t we? Surely choice of watch is an opportunity to express just that.

For me it was a ND Sub but not long ago you could pick one up for sensible money.

I still think as an entrance to Rolex you cannot go far wrong, if indeed that is your poison and it did take me a while to build the war chest.

Agree also though a G10 is a must go to watch.

Odly, and whilst I realise it's an iconic piece i've never really liked the Speedmaster. Although I do have an X33 Skywalker I don't really consider it to be a Speedmaster of the classic variety which everyone should have.
I'd Suggest everyone try a Sinn, my preference is the U2 but the range is so diverse there's something for most people....

If it's within your budget though i'd suggest everyone try The SD4K. Get rid of the dive extension on the bracelet and it's the perfect all rounder, for me anyway....

I'd say get what you really want and not what anyone (expert or not) tells you you should have. I don't believe that any watch is a universal WIS-must-have [even though I have a Speedy!].

Some great – and interesting – advice turning up on this thread, thanks for all the tips.

Liking the idea of a Smiths W10. I didn't realise the Sir Edmund Hillary connection. Is the Hamilton 6B one to think about too?

And yes all the time to the Rolex Sub idea but budget for that is a long way off!
