Damn, missed it - bidding has ended ;).

I think it was Carlton-Browne who warned me about Ukrainian frankens when I first joined and I've come to appreciate what he meant. I'm sure there are some trustworthy watch sellers in the Ukraine but you don't see them very often.

It's a shame that it has been modded (in my opinion), as the movement is top notch. "Dead Beat" centre-seconds, repeater, wolf's teeth wheels and gold trainwheels.

And there I was believing this old wives tale that GP had created the first wristwatch for the military in 1880...

What do you think it actually is then? Is it a real Poitevin movement but the case, dial etc. are from elsewhere?

I don't know for sure, but the location it was bought from is a known hotbed of, shall we say "repurposed" p/w movements.
The movement looks genuine, as does the inner case back but the rest of the case is suspect.
Where is the crown and stem tube? Usually with an original case that has had contemporary lugs added, the stem and crown are still in situ, although sometimes the stem and tube have been shortened. This one is completely lacking a crown, stem, and stem tube.

Edit- And it doesn't fit the case correctly either.

Thanks, that makes sense and is helpful.

Even with my limited knowledge I have seen some shockers from the Ukraine.

Thanks for the correction, silly mistake to make...
Still, it doesn't look original case to me, what do you think?

    Cheers, Bob.

One thing the case back the holes don't line up to were you put the key in to wind it and set the time. And should only be two holes not three like they drilled the holes and kept missing the mark were they line up funny shit.

The (pocket) watch may be from 1858...and even a "military" watch, but NOT an 1858 military WRISTWATCH. The lugs were added much later.

I originally found this watch on the NAWCC forum, the thread was pretty much the same as the ebay guff, minus the Dan Brown-esque conspiracy "embellishments"...
The NAWCC forum has deleted the thread, and the OP has strangely changed his name from "Antiktak" (ebay sellers ID is antictac777) to...(cough)..."masterwatchmaker"...
