I of course am talking about 'The White Stripes'

for me I could never get it, I always thought they were crap, gimmicky, incestuous (see google for rumours with Jack Black and Sister Meg)

recently as a lover of John peels recommendations, I decided to revisit them, and try and understand why he thought they were so good?

now I get it, I wont explain, but let you decide, do you 'get' the White Stripes?

I will start with my favorite track at the moment, and by way an introduction to them (if you are not already into them),

and follow up with another couple of tracks, that I think explain why I like them now, leaving me wondering how deep the rabbit hole goes, so to speak....

    enjoy,

Jack and Meg were married, not related by blood.

Fave song is "Catch Hell Blues".

I think they are a great band, and their music always reminds me of my favourite 'indie/ rock' club in Edinburgh, the Citrus Club.

Yes later this was confirmed, but at the start they made out they were 'brother and sister' as they thought no one would take them seriously as a duo, this led to the rumours of Incest.

I just didnt get it Kirk, as a Rock fan myself, and as a sound engineer who has toured with many bands, I just couldnt put my finger on it, it just sounded contrived.

    now I get it.

Love The White Stripes and loved Peel. Surprised there's no The Fall on that list, IIRC they had more sessions (24?) than any other band.

This list has to be spurious. Peelie's penchant for Mark E Smith and whichever collection of musicians made up The Fall at any given time is well documented - including playing at his birthday party, etc, etc, so a list which doesn't include anything by The Fall just makes no sense.

(I do like The White Stripes myself, especially Hotel Yorba, We're Going To Be Friends and John The Revelator).

it is what it is, this was his list of tracks that they found under his desk in his 'listening area' full documentary, this is the full thing on Youtube,

part 4 is there as well, it will follow on from these three,

I was thinking just that, he seemed to be always banging on about The Fall, so how did they not feature ??

The reason the Fall did not feature is that they were that special they had their own section separate from this collection see link below.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-en...ds-323339.html

"Oddly, there are no contributions from one of all-time Peel's favourite bands, the Fall. But the DJ's son, Tom Ravenscroft, said: "He had a whole area of his collection dedicated to the Fall, so he knew exactly where to find them if he needed them. The box was more for some of his obscure records which he might otherwise have difficulty finding."

This link also provides some of the main bands that John Peel supported (including the White Stripes).

Interesting thread, but no Joy Division either

Will revisit some of the songs you have posted from the White Stripes, love some of their stuff but a majority doesn't click with me.

Funny that, Joy Division was the first thing I looked for as well.

I'm surprised that there is no Beefheart on the list as I thought that he was one of Peel's favourites

White stripes fan here too although I find JP's list a bit baffling TBH.

People like what they like I guess.

Likewise I'm afraid, and still don't.

    Great list though, thanks.

Very pleased to see Clague – The Stride/ I Wonder Where on there, I was an immense Kevin Coyne fan. Still greatly missed.

Apologies in advance for a slight diversion to Classical John Peel (Radio 3): Private Passions from 1996.

I don't really get them, but some of their songs are OK and they had a distinctive style which is always good.

I grew up with John Peel on the radio after bedtime, but i soon realised he played far too much of a mix for me to agree with everything he played or liked.

For me much of that list can only be explained by exposure to mind altering substances.

I've always liked the White Stripes......I think my favourite is Seven Nation Army played very loudly (actually I think at the moment 'Elephant' is my favourite album from them)

I always liked listening to JP,as much formthe stuff he played that I thought was crap as for the stuff that was good! Interesting list though....I might make a play list.

I always thought John Peel was a poseur, leaping onto the latest musical fashion in an effort to be seen as perpetually cool, and with an inflated opinion of his own importance.

    Interesting perspective.

If he was, he jumped pretty early most of the time!

It's also true to say that in his early days he was pretty mainstream prog-rock, although you could see that as posing in its time, I guess.

Even if you're right, he was certainly influential in moving some of these 'fashions' into the mainstream. Who else was doing it?

I must admit I think that point of view certainly has an element of truth.
