older laptop help!

hi chaps,
i've just wiped an old laptop of mine and loaded windows xp onto it as a temporary measure before i pass it on to a non tech savvy pal, but how do i get it to search for a router? it's insisting on a dial up connection - and i can't connect it to the net to search for drivers!

Use a memory stick to get the wireless drivers onto it

Or maybe plug in a Ethernet network cable into it? Update the rest of the software [|Flash/Java] at the same time.
