    Special Rolex Datejust

So played golf with my mate last week, managed to get a couple (not that good) pictures of his latest acquisition.

Not too many of these about!

This was from this years Goodwood Revival.

    Very nice !

Make sure he realises the importance of keeping everything with it as provenance for the future.

I have some photos of an 18ct Day-Date presented to a VERY famous golfer, whose family we acted for recently. Can't show it, sadly, but such pieces are of great interest. Hard to value when the provenance / status of the wearer is often unique. I'm usually a sucker for them and can thank only good fortune that I resisted the urge to pick up Savile's Day-Date when it came up at Dreweatt & Neate a few years back.

Thanks for posting. There won't be many of these 116334s around in future, never mind one with the history and interesting case-back.

"On Sunday afternoon, Lord March, founder of Goodwood Revival in 1998, announced the winner of this year’s Rolex Driver of the Meeting on the Race Control Balcony. 2012 World Touring Car Champion, Rob Huff caught the attention of the judges in the Lotus-Oldsmobile 19 from 1962, as he stormed to victory in the Whitsun Trophy taking the ultimate prize: a specially engraved Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust II."

That's very nice, but my eye is drawn to the 9 o'clock marker, which bugs me! Any reason they did that rather than a Roman numeral?

I will ask him and find out why the marker is at 9.

It's a standard design feature on some of these, so don't bother him.

I believe that the intention was aesthetically to balance the date window at three o'clock. Not to most people's taste, I would agree.

Don't let it detract from a watch which will be of interest to many, especially that case-back work. Warranty card from Rolex London I would imagine.

He wont be getting rid of any box or papers and 100% a keeper.

I have tried it on and we both came to the same conclusion, as nice as the engraving is, its very sharp against the back of the wrist. Needs some wearing in!

Er.....I would suggest instead a suitable sticker over the case-back. Want to keep it nice and sharp, I would say!

I hope no-one minds me asking but I don't know much about Rolex variants. Apart from the caseback, what is special about this Datejust?

    Just trying to learn.

    Special Rolex Datejust

Just the case back which gives it exclusivity.

Other than that it's a standard watch which is why it's essential to keep all the paperwork to show provenance.

There was one in the local AD's window at £4800 today.

I quite like it and I wouldn't normally be a Datejust fan.

Was it designed by stevie wonder?

    It's just plain horrid.

I've always fancied one of the ones that they present to LeMans winners. Would be pretty special.

Lovely. Just makes you wonder why Rolex don't do anything interesting with their case backs?

Does anyone know why? Given that most of their popular models are steeped in history, why don't they play on that through their case backs? I would love to know!

I like the uniqueness of the case back but not a fan of the dial tbh.
