One film never to be touched!

Following on the the "films you think deserve a remake" thread, how about this little reversal - films you'd like to see untouched.

    There were one or two good suggestions in the other thread (massive +1 for The Godfather), but if I could put a huge "DO NOT TOUCH" banner across one movie;

    The Blues Brothers.

The original is just perfect, it doesn't need tweaking or updating. The sequel, Blues Brothers 2000 was... well, passable if it wasn't for the kid. The music numbers were still quality at least.
Dan Aykroyd has tried pushing for a third installment but no-one seems to want it, Ben Stiller and Jack Black discussed starring in a sequel/prequel/remake but I really don't want to see that happen.
    There is an animated series on the way apparently which might be a bit of fun without ruining the original 1980 movie. Aykroyd was quoted as saying;

“The show will be the Blues Brothers living in America and utilizing all new technology to make and promote their own records, seek out and record new artists and avoid law enforcement – and all while fighting for truth, justice and a better breakfast sandwich,”

Sounds quite a fun diversion, but please - no remake!!

I 100% agree with your comments regarding the Blues Brothers.

A short list of films which couldn't be improved IMHO

    Apocalypse Now

Duvall, Brando, Hopper, Ford, Fishburne and Sheen, directed by Francis Ford Copolla. I can't see how it could be improved upon in any way. If I could be cheeky and just pick one more it would be:

The Unforgiven. Clint has made a lot of very fine movies, both as an actor and a director, but for me it doesn't get any better than this, with fine supporting roles by Morgan Freeman, Richard Harris and a magnificent Gene Hackman.

Did you have a Deer tied onto the bonnet.

Think these are possibly a bit too recent to need protecting but would also add

Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan

I gave up reading the other thread as people seemed to be listing their favourite films, many of them 'greats'.
    Surely you'd only remake:
    • films that could have been great but were flawed
    • films with tech/effects that have now moved on - to be fair there were some of those offered

    Anyway, enough of that...

One film that should never be touched is 'The Straight Story' - nobody will ever make a better film of a man riding across the US on a lawnmower.

Beetlejuice. Or indeed any Tim Burton film could not be remade by anyone other than Tim Burton. Thats nowhere near my favourite film btw.

It's a wonderful life - black and white - let's not mention the colorized version .

Magirus - they've already done Day of the Jackal and House of cards !

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. You'll never be able to assemble such a perfect cast again.

There are so many that should be sacrosanct, but I will always have a place in my heart for Ferris Bueller - perfect first time, and should never be remade.

Alfred Hitchcock films should also never be touched, and the remake of Psycho (virtually shot for shot), although perfectly watchable, was utterly pointless.

Oh, and "Birth of a Nation" should never be remade under any circumstances, but then I don't think there is any chance it will be.

Remaking Wayne's World would make no sense anyway, but I actually think Bill & Ted could be remade. It's not a classic in the same way as Blade Runner or Back to the Future. Of course it would have to be a good remake, but it is perfectly possible to redo that film and make it better than the original. It's good, but it isn't perfect by any means.

As an example of the sort of terrible remake that shouldn't exist: Ghostbusters.

Another one for the list: The Matrix. Although it is a shame they never made a sequel.

Blade Runner for sure, watched only 2 nights ago! Stunning visually considering its age!

Significantly better. Really. A masterpiece of the finest Italian cinema from Dino Risi. Agostina Belli is also outstanding (ly beautiful )

You're very far from the alone in this.

In fact, I'd say a decent-sized chunk of the population is going to be feeling quite tense for some time.

Still, initial reports sound promising, so fingers crossed.

I'd like to see a remake of Escape to Victory with Lionel Messi(Ossie Ardiles)/Cristiano Ronaldo (Pele)/David Beckham(Bobby Moore) and The Rock (Sly Stallone)

Impossible to agree enough with the Ferris Bueller film comment. I do hope they never remake it!
The music, the cast, the cars everything was perfect.

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. I find it very difficult to imagine anyone other than Roger Livesey and Anton Walbrook in those roles. And who could replace the enchanting Deborah Kerr?

I preferred Bogus Journey to the first one (The Grim Reaper and "Station" )

Anyway, I agree with leaving it alone re. a remake, but I'll still turn up for another sequel!

First person to suggest The Big Lebowski gets a fist pie, godawful overrated claptrap.
I'll go all arty with The Lives of Others, watched it to see what all the fuss was about - bloody mesmerising. Perfect film

    Ronin and Bullit

All the tech and CGI cant improve on the car chases in those films and also dont think you could replace Robert De Niro/Jean Reno or Steve McQueen

I was of course referring to the excellent House of Cards in which the late Ian Richardson made the part of Francis Urquhart his very own. and the follow on mini series To Play The King and The Final Cut, broadcast in 1990/93/95 respectively, four episodes apiece. It was a drama very much of it's time and place. I apologise if you thought I meant the tripe made in America with the same name.

Debbie does Dallas - I mean let's face it she didn't look great the first time, imagine how she'd look now

    Oops wrong thread

Apart from the obvious Godfather 1 and 2, I'll go with Goodfellas - perfect film and no new cast could better them.
