I'm in need of a new set of wheels, must be an estate, ( or big enough to fit a standard poodle in the back ), a bit of performance would be nice, ( forget that, it's a must ), budget, anything up to about £15K for the right car.
I know it's a bit of a random topic, but suggestions would be helpful.

Save 10k or more, Saab 9-5 estate , quikish in 150bhp form, also available in 185 and 250 forms (petrol, no idea what the oil burner is).
Depends what you mean by performance, but I would be thinking BMW F11 530D with your requirements

Honda Accord for the most boring but reliable alternative.

Or any of its diesel siblings: remapping does power output a lot of good, space is cavernous and luxurious, and if you take avant garde with all the toys you'l have a fine motor indeed. With a lot of change left.

I deliberately selected that one because of the five litre V8; mine is a remapped E220d estate in the same colour. It's a superb car but not as sporty.

I've recently sold a Saab 9-3, must say it was a very nice car, quite happily have another.
Have had quite a few beemers and actually viewed a 335 recently, very nice but it was dealer money on a private sale, just too much.
Merc interests me but I've never owned one, or driven one, maybe look at the c class estate, anyone know which one to go for, ( test drive ).
I do like the forester but comments made by swmbo have put me off, ( I know, who's car is it, but we still listen to them, lol ).
Skoda is going to b a real leap for me, spending serious money on something that I've ripped the piss out of for years, ( I know they're different now ).

The performance stats are understated by Auto Trader for some reason. With 321 bhp I beleive it's good for 170 mph unlimited and sub 6 second 0-60.
Otherwise, based on your preferences I think it would have to be BMW, Mercedes or Audi. All have fine engine choices. I love my 330d (e91) Touring, the torque is superb but as an estate it's not the most practical.
Put a bit of snow in the mix, and none of these fast estates would know where the symmetrical 4 wheel drive Legacy spec b went....
(Checking the nearest petrol station would be good place to start!)
My wife has one of these - expensively thirsty but otherwise excellent... and so is the Subaru
The S Audi is four wheel drive. A set of winter tyres and it will go anywhere.
It does handle well though.

Seriously though, we picked up a high(ish) mileage Legacy about 5 years ago as a family "barge". The only thing that's gone wrong was that it threw the serpentine belt due to wear in the idler pulley. It didn't even need recovered as I popped along with a spare battery and drove it home with that supplying the necessary juice (no p.a.s. though so it was hard work!). A belt , 2 new pulleys from the local auto spares shop , 45 mins spannering and it was good to go.
I believe this is a fairly common fault with the 3.0 engine after a good few miles so it there's an odd noise from the front on tick-over don't ignore it (like what I did.)
That (and the thirst) apart it's been great. We had an occasion last week where we had to cover 80 or so miles over twisty B roads quite quickly to get from one function to another in time. Circumstance dictated we had to use the Subaru. As the skies opened and thunderstorms resulted in huge amounts of surface water I was glad of the choice of vehicle.
The big engined Subarus are def. worth a look
Yep - mine also shredded the belt due to a pully failure. A cheap fix - luckily!
