Using a watch for what it was designed

Just wondered if many people actually wear their watches for what they were designed?

I race boats, only little one design boats but I always wear my Yacht Master 2 and use the 10 minutes count down timer in fact I much prefer it to a digital display.

Yup. I need to know the time at several points during the day so glance at it a lot. And I enter the date on a few documents each morning, so need the date for that.

I know I could use my phone, but I prefer using a watch.

It's a divers watch though, so maybe not used for its true purpose - I never use the divers bezel I must admit, to time boiling an egg for example.

Well I tend to use them to tell the time

The internal rotating bezel on my Alpinist with its compass function is useful if I lose my bearings on the way back from Waitrose as well

I once went swimming in the sea near Lime Regis wearing a Vostok Amphiboa too

I suspect that most specialist functions have little practical benefit for many - its about fashiom or how it looks

Nothing wrong with that of course

    Yup.
I work for a US company and regularly attend conf calls with clients and colleagues from MN.
So a smart GMT is actually the most useful watch / complication for me.

It's also useful when I'm over there, so I can call home at sensible times.

I have a G-Shock which is used when I play footy, cycle, run ...

And as its solar / Atomic - it's also useful for setting my other watches.

I have a beater that's used when I'm working from home / DIYing

As for my others - not so much.

I have a chrono ... It's a fantastic movement, looks lovely, but I never use it to time anything.

I have a Pilot - but never Pilot anything other than the company car.

    I have a few divers, but TBH ... If I'm 300m down...
... the last thing on my mind would be 'I wonder what time it is ?'

Very much so. A cute lump of 9ct glinting in your wrist is far from encouraging you to do anything but bask in the moment.

    All the time.
Use my Z-33 and X-33 while flying planes
My Sub and DSSD when exploring for old ships that have drowned
My racing chronos when competing in F-1
    And, so on
And Ofcourse my phone to tell time.
And, the answer will remain the same when someone asks the question again in a month.

Does working hard while wearing a G-Shock count? Sorry I couldn't think of anything pseudo-funny to ridicule the OP.

When I'm dogging, I use my luminox - those tritium tubes come in hand when you are hanging around in the bushes.

I bought a Pro-Trek from SC with the aim of using the radio signal to time my other watches. I didn't think the other functions would ever be used, but the barometer has proved surprisingly accurate and is useful when on Scilly, as weather and sea conditions play a huge part in movement both around the islands and when contemplating returning to civilisation.
Also when salmon fishing it allows me to find out why I haven't caught anything.

Yes, I use it to impress fellow citizens (sub).

On a serious note, I do use the timer and I like the robustness even if I don't dive. But let's face it we wear these mechanical watches because we like it, a digital/quartz watch is better from all technical perspectives.

I sold last year my Fortis Flieger GMT to this guy: Justyn Gorman

So I like to think, yes sometimes they are used for what they were made for.

I generally use timing bezels / chronographs for cooking times.

Never used the tachymetre and doubt I ever will. anyone ever need one of those?
