Your watch on a NATO - your take

Whilst I like a NATO strap, I am undecided about putting some of my pieces on NATO. This is because it is not the thing to do! Fancy a Rolex Day Date on one?

However my recent Blancpain got me wondering, is it possible to broaden the horizon? Is there a limit?

Thoughts and pictures will be appreciated.

I've worn my Day-Date on a Nato. I'll dig out some photos later.

Your watches, bought and worn to please you alone, so do what looks good to you. The A.N.A.L. will be along shortly to dissuade you. (Against Natos Always League) ;-)

So are we talking about Leather or Nylon NATO straps... Or both?

Sterling silver case, on a NATO.

(One made of perlon, but a proper NATO nonetheless. Last time I looked there was still only one person selling these on ebay, and only in black)

Sorry no pics but all of my admittedly limited collection (18A, couple of amphibians, Smiths Everest, Orient dress watch, Orient diver) are on NATO´s presently...several reasons; easy to swap, easy to wash just chuck in the machine, durable, tons of variations, lightweight, inexpensive and perhaps most importantly comfy. A G shock is the exception but that doesn´t get worn all day long.

I love a NATO strap, comfortable, and a good bit of variety for very little loot. Particularly comfortable in the summer. I have even bought a few watches with the sole intention of wearing them on a NATO.

I will resist the temptation to put any of my watches on a NATO (again!) - threads like these make them look great in pictures, in real life I find them uncomfortable and very odd looking. I've tried Eddies, which are still the best imho, phoenix, marathon and various others and find all of them (even when slashed to RAF style) make the watch head sit too high, they stretch when wet, and stay soggy for ages, mark the back of the watch and I'm always between the holes so they never fit right. I really wish they were as good in real life as pics suggest 😖

I prefer NATOs to all other strap types, so virtually every watch I have is on one.

but as you can see I tend to wear tool /military watches so they suit them.

I think you can get away with anything on a NATO! I always wear them on pull through though, removing the extra bit....

There are more... but these are the ones you might not expect on nylon.

    Not a huge NATO fan.

Like most others I tried them (And have quite a few), but keep going back to Leather or a bracelets.

I do, though, have my Dreadnought Voyager on a RAF - Looks and feels great.

I love 'em but only on certain watches - here are a couple that surprised me and I think work well - you may not agree!

    Another NATO fan here...

    ...of the current crop

Although I have smarter watches such as the Zenith EP 69 & B&M Classima GMT - neither of which I would consider on a NATO

Whats the love of NATOS about? Is it aesthetic or do they feel a lot better? I can't imagine not wearing a bracelet

Edit - some of them do look good! Especially the Damaskos posted above. Ooh la la

Love that. I've got a solar atomic g on a plain black NATO with strap adaptors and I really like it. Think it works really well.

As an aside - heads up - Eddie's TF braided NATOs are back in stock after several years they are the best NATOs to have IMO, due to the way they curve around the wrist and the almost infinite adjustability.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

imho Natos look 'awful', they suit watches that has been used with signs of 'wabi' and not mint modern watches.

Natos are an acquired taste. I used to like them in pics but somehow not IRL.
My views have changed 180 degrees since then. They look good on the wrist and are extremely comfortable.

(Mostly) past watches - I really like NATOs and have had all my watches on them at some time. But, all my current watches are on bracelets, for some reason, apart from the CWC Navigator...

My CWC watches and a Precista 6BB I have are all on Natos as they have fixed bars, other than that it's the sporty/tooly ones. I don't think my Datejust or Archimede Deck watch would suit these straps, although these type of watches do look ok on Natos in pictures that others post. The CWC diver is the watch I always use for holidays and I take several straps so I always have a clean one to hand.

I have phases. Sometimes I really like NATO's and other times enjoy the standard SS bracelet (on Rolex's) or a nice vintage leather. Suppose the beauty of it is that if you want to change its pretty easy and they don't cost a fortune to buy.

Not massively clear but heres a pic of my 587 on a Wotancraft Nylon Compass strap (sadly not as cheap as most nylon straps)

Explorer II Orange hand with a bit of colour.

Almost perfect combo IMO. Breitling on Eddies NATO!!!!!

The 16600 always suits a nice bit of Nylon.

5513 and NATO are a match made in heaven!

Old tritium dialled 14060 (With Perfect squashed 'O')

    Tudor Submariner 76100

    Omega Speedmaster

So I've never put a NATO on my 16710 GMT Master II, Explorer 1 14270 or any of my Datejust's. Maybe they are better suited to sportier watches in my eyes, maybe I'll try one on my bi-metal DJ today.

I used to put Zulu and Nato straps on all of my watches, but without doing it on purpose and knowingly they all ended up on my PMW (beaters).

Then there's the GasGasBones nylon option too...

I have tried natos before and although very comfortable they never stayed on the watch for long

Decided to try again with a deluxe RAF style, much better style without the extra flappy bits

    We will see

I prefer a traditional leather strap to be honest - but a NATO every now and then makes a change (TF of course)

Recently tried one on my POLM, but it made the watch wear too big and also created some uncomfortable gaps between wrist and case...

I also tried it on a regular NATO...

Better, but still not as good as the bracelet or leather...

I have tried various combinations on different watches but this is my favorite watch/nato combination.

I like the way a NATO lifts the watch on the wrist. Not quite as much as the timefactors strap above, which may be too thick, but the shot on the regular NATO looks perfect to me.

I find that's partly why NATO straps are so comfortable.

Also stops the caseback from getting covered in crud. All the crud gets absorbed by the strap...

I'd be pretty much a Nato or bracelet wearer. I've only two on "normal" straps.

    I love zulu straps.
Nato not so much but they are also ok.

    Here is unusual watch-strap combo:

It's a GasGasBones Horween leather nato, they are made to measure - the lug to lug length is set and sewn in to reduce metal loop number then the length is cut for your wrist size so the strap ends at the metal loop so you don't have a long tail to tuck back.

As mentioned above it is quite thick with 2x2mm thicknesses of leather under the watch. I have it in 20 and 22mm and the horween has taken a nice colour with age and very comfortable

    http://www.gasgasbones.com/ggb-goodi...r-nato-v1.html

I just noticed on the link above there are pictures of the strap with a Black Bay and a MM300 - those are my pics I sent to Carl for him to use - just in case you think the wrist is familiar to the Bremont pic above
