On reading back, it seems obvious that it was the crown that was the issue, but I guess my mind was elsewhere whilst my fingers were present

Orient Mako without the Seiko (Day display). IMHO this simple change greatly improves the asthetics of the watch.

Remove the date, put a 3 in and I think it would look even better.

Orient do in fact make many other dive watches (and have done for years), some of which do look like that! They're already there.

And yet it is the Mako that continues to grab attention.

Little bigger Orient text for me but almost there, hate orient logo aswell. Only thing that has Made me not buy a mako, a shame really...

More than the problems with the design I'm very tempted with one of the slightly more expensive divers but where can they be serviced or repaired?

Probably save cash towards getting an Omega again because of this but otherwise I'd be tempted...
