Driving Northbound on the M11 on Monday afternoon, near Stansted I think I saw a convoy of a coach followed by what looked like 5 or 6 plain white large box vans with a large Police escort of 4 or 5 motorbikes and a couple of Range Rovers all with their blue lights on, any ideas what it might have been?

I worked for a company that took deliveries of nuclear materials occasionally - quite a similar spectacle.
This was also posted on one of my regular FB groups. Consensus is it's either weapons and ammo, or somethings to to with the EU referendum equipment
Possibly a large amount of cash, bullion or drugs to be destroyed. Don't know why they would have a coach there though.

That convoy was the decoy.
The drugs/gold/EU referendum equipment (eh?)/arms/plutonium were in the back of a Vauxhall Nova on the A12.
Could be worse. You could have nuclear weapons being transported up and down your motorway like we have on the M74 and M8 here.
The only problem with using a Nova is that you'd have all the retro car nuts taking photos of it though (off topic - but I was quite surprised by the cost of them these days).
Coaches carry more personnel than can be carried in a few Range Rovers.
To the best of my knowledge, convoys roughly similar to the one described here are used to carry nuclear warheads (or potentially all sorts of seriously valuable, dangerous or sensitive items as suggested above). Thus there is potentially a need for reasonable numbers of people promptly on hand to handle all sorts of emergency (or just to secure the convoy if pulling over somewhere).
There's a website which describes the usual makeup of a nuclear warhead convoy: http://www.nukewatch.org.uk/?page_id=21. The website is anti-nuke and I'm not anti-nuke but it makes interesting reading nonetheless.
The convoy described by the OP does not exactly match the description of a nuclear warhead convoy but it's not too far off.
It could be something nuclear.
Not warheads, as they travel in large green or blue trucks and have mainly military support vehicles, but perhaps nuclear material within the white vans and the coach would have engineers/support personnel in case of a problem en route.

It wasn't this, these convoys use navy blue foden trucks(unlike the military green mercs), and always have an emergency truck with them. The convoy being discussed wasn't nuclear.
Seems that way, I'll be using that WUS like description on SC with confidence..

Those are Seddon Atkinson rather than Foden: link. I'd expect that they are used for one specific type of material. Might not other materials use different vehicles?

These white merc 7.5toners are used to transport the likes of javelin launchers, and other bits of heavy military hardware. Living in a few military heavy counties in my time, I've seen them all around, from the SAS barracks at Hereford to the ammo stores at longtown.
Also, if you contact driver hire in Carlisle they're currently looking for civilian drivers to transport the gear in white artics out of longtown. Pretty non describe wagons but always tailed by a wee white Peugeot van😉

Ah-ha...thanks for that. The convoy the OP saw sound a bit bigger than that, especially as it has a coach for back-up personnel (including specialists) so I suspect it was SNM. Perhaps it had been transported by air and landed at an air base in East Anglia?
Definitely a coach leading followed by the unmarked identical box vans, 2 police bikes up front with another 2 about a mile in front at junctions, with at least one probably 2 marked Range Rovers following, all lights going.

It was the immediate response convoy for deployment in the event of a zombie apocalypse. The convoy drives in a huge circle, the centre of which is London, stopping off at pre-determined and highly secure points every 72 hours for a change of operatives. If you ever see it stop and the vehicles form up in a circle, make sure you have something to hand that can be used to stove in zombie skulls.
I think an earlier thread also determined that a DSSD was required for surviving a zombie apocalypse.

As a child I remember seeing a similar convoy going through East London to the Bank of England print works. Motorbikes front and back would stop traffic at all junctions to ensure the truck never stopped. The truck was special, it had a second cab behind and above the drivers cab. There sat armed police, clearly visible from the road side. I was always told it was old money being taken to be insinerated.
I saw Tony Blair escorted through West London in a similar convoy back in the day. So yeah, could be nuclear waste, could be Blair... any highly toxic and dangerous cargo really.
Just passing the turn to Aldermaston late on Sunday night and a convoy of white box vans joined the motorway. Uniformed drivers, consecutive number plates and consecutive numbering high up on the back of each van. I was so curious I left the motorway and rejoined at the same junction so I could have another look.
They were going my way into London, so I followed at a discrete distance, but I lost them somewhere around Earls Court. Picked some of them up later as they went into the City, and finally saw a couple stop on the side of the road in Lower Thames St. Couldn't resist, so parked round the corner and got out to have a look.
The back of one of the vans was open and several men were unloading large bundles of... newspapers.
Guess that was never going to be my journalistic debut.
If it was near Manchester, I'd have said kids on a school trip perhaps?

Nuclear weapons are not handled at Plymouth, so nuclear fuel and conventional weapons movements only.
Edit: I believe it must be pretty rare for a SSBN to visit Plymouth.
