    Point taken.

By the way, you still owe me a pint. Got plans to visit my country anytime soon?

There might be a birthday party in Trier later in the year with a three-line whip - I hope so.

Here a small video showing how the minute and hour disks move. Note the tiny incremental move of the minute disk when the seconds passes through 55.

    A Lange & Söhne Zeitwerk

Amazing how satisfying it is to see small disks move!

What a lovely piece of engineering!

You mentioned in your original post about the energy required to move the discs, and the need for a bespoke escapement - what is the power reserve?

36 hours IIRC. A considerable achievement

The technology is described here: http://www.watchtime.com/reviews/big...ohne-zeitwerk/ *

Interesting to note that the mainspring for the Zeitwerk is even stronger than the one for the Lange 31, with its 31 days of power reserve. As you would expect, winding a Zeitwerk requires application of some force.

    * watchtime.net says the movement consists of 388 parts - however according to the Lange website there are 415 parts.

A moot point IMHO, either way it's an awful lot of whirligigs to assemble correctly! ;-)

The Lange catalogue states 415 as well, including 68 jewels. If your interested, the Zeitwerk Acoustique has 528 components.

The Lange Zeitwerk is one of the more unusual watches, it is the very first purely mechanical wristwatch with both precisely jumping hours and minutes display. The main challenge behind the construction of this calibre was to deliver the enormous power which is required to push the minute disk forward every 60 seconds. Lange have solved this with designing a constant-force escapement, which sits between an massive barrel construction and the mechanism which powers the minute and hour disks. Basically there is a small "remontoir" spring which is "charged" every 60 seconds and then released to push forward the minute disk in a rapid movement.

The movement contains over 400 parts and 68 jewels. Due to its immense power consumption the reserve is only about 36 hours, so it needs to be hand-wound daily.

I have been wanting to own a Zeitwerk for years, my recent 50th birthday provided the excuse to go ahead with the purchase. This week the new tailor-made strap from Camille Fournet arrived, so now it's ready to go into rotation.
