Just heard this news as well,
Respect and RIP.
Just heard on R4 that the great man has died. RIP Winkle.
Just heard this news as well,
Respect and RIP.
Bless him, a great man like so many before him RIP great man
RIP Eric 'Winkle' Brown; a very humble hero. Flew 487 different aircraft types (a record that will probably never be broken) and 2,407 carrier landings (also unlikely to be broken). Wings on My Sleeve is an outstanding read.

Oh no, amazing chap. Lived a full life. RIP.
Died aged 97 "after a short illness" (BBCLink). There are worse ways to go and he'd been close to a few of them. Still, it's sad to see him go...
Here's tae us, wha's like us, damn few and they're a' deid... A fine Scotsman and an even finer pilot, God rest his soul
Sad news, but what a fantastic innings.
Very sad news. The documentary on him last year was absolutely brilliant.
Sad to hear but what a great innings.
RIP Winkle.
Cheers,
Neil.
Radio 4 are releasing a podcast on his life - can't find it though
Surely worth a listen?
The extraordinary life of Captain 'Winkle' Brown...and there's should be a repeat of earlier tribute programmes. Desert Island Disc is already online and well worth a listen.
PS Plenty more on YouTube: search for Eric Winkle Brown, Captain Winkle Brown etc...eg:
Edit: And also: The Extraordinary Story of Captain Winkle Brown.

Thanks Pickle B!
RIP Winkle.
May you rest in peace and rise in glory.
A fellow Leither!!
Thanks again
Listened to it last night... It was a 7 min excerpt from the Today programme that I'd heard in the morning. - very good. However, I am certain I also heard that they were pulling together a 1 hour long peice on his life (or maybe I had misheard) - either way it's worth keeping an eye out!
I gave dessert island a whirl too, which was also very good

Sad news, a truly inspiring man who lived a very full life.
I read his biography after watching the documentary, I'm amazed he was never knighted for the outstanding contribution, often at great personal risk, that he made to his country.
There's a programme on BBC2 today at 19:00: Britain's Greatest Pilot: The Extraordinary Story of Captain Winkle Brown. I've a feeling it's been on before and I may have seen it.

Wow!! What a fulfilled life he had. Top respect!!!
Ive just watched the BBC programme - Britains Greatest Pilot: The Extraordinary Story of Captain Winkle Brown
Absolutely fascinating
What a man!
Me too. My wife watched it too and said two things.
First was "how come we've never heard of him?"
Second was "it makes you wonder about life and how much some people do!"
Both were very true imho (and I don't say that about her comments that often!)
