Well done Raffe, can't wait to see the photos.

When you say your skills are limited, I assume you don't mean your negotiating skills?

:-) I have sat too often on the other side of the table, suppose you learn a trick or two along the way.

Good effort can't wait to see the pics. Did you negotiate a new strap or just send the one in question off to a leper Colony.

The sales staff had to call the manager, who refused. I explained why I wanted a new strap and that I wasn't after a second strap, they could keep the current one and use it for display purposes. I even offered to take the watch without the strap and they would send me a new one by post, but he didn't want to do it.

In the end I walked out, as much because of the used strap as because of the manager's attitude.

Needless to say I am very disappointed.
Good for you on waking out, but I'm sure not many people have tried it on because basically it's expensively fugally.

Bumping lots of old threads just to be rude isn't reminiscent of anything good. Especially if done sober.

It's an opinion I'm not being rude, it's expensive and ugly.
    End of.

Okay. Change "rude" to "give a contrary opinion". You're still looking like a bunny-boiler.

I think the last time I addressed myself directly to Raffe was months ago when I was rude about his appearance, so that random swing of the fist has gone sailing past.

If you want to go nuts, that's your own look out, but be sure first, eh?

Then don't get involved and go away then, no point in sticking your big nose in then is there.

No, this is nonsense, if you want to have a meltdown in public, you don't get to decide what the public response is. If you want to be angry with Raffe without anyone else joining in the conversation, use PMs.

Regardless of the reason, I appreciated the thread bump as I just missed it last year. Interesting reading. Raffe, have you still got the watch? If so, a regular wearer? :-)

Glad the thread was revived as well. Is this normal service from any ALS dealer such as Wempe?

Hi, yes I still got the watch.

I bought it as a present to myself for my 50th birthday, coincidently I also left my tie-wearing job at the same time and haven't had much opportunity to wear it since. I still like it, just that it feels a bit odd to wear it with jeans and t-shirt...

Madness that they lost a 35k sale over a strap.

Tis a bit like buying an exdisplay car that was sat in the showroom and demanding huge discount plus new interior. Ich don't think so.

No. It's asking for the car to be valeted.

Seems crazy, most brands routinely order you a small or large strap if that is needed, and for free. Langes are not big sellers so this is suicidal service and practice.

Your analogy was bad. I made it better. Feel free to disagree but comparing a disposable item with a car interior is preposterous, as are the relevant prices. £35k will get you a pretty decent exhibition motor, if you consider that the cost of a new strap is close to £100 we're much closer incost to a full valet than a brand new leather seat, let alone a full interior.

The cost of a new ALS strap 100quid? I think you're in for a nasty surprise.

Regardless, the issue here is about others trying it on and making it unhygienic/used. The showroom car analogy is very much appropriate here.

PS I'd love to see someone ask for a new bracelet on an ex-display platinum Daytona.

To the trade it wouldn't be far off. To you and I probably 4 to 5 times more. Valet will deal with the hygienic aspect: as I said a leather strap will be disposed off when used. Not so a platinum bracelet or a car interior, you're clutching at straws.

Only if on your visit to the showroom you check out how the driver's seat feels on your bare buttocks.

Yes because testing a car doesn't imply touching the steering wheel, seatbelts (imagine how any sweaty parts a seatbelt rubs against, yuck) and other parts of trim/interior with your hands.

As demonstrated earlier you're clutching at straws. Let it go.

TZ member George Falconer has probably tried on all high end stock models in every AD in London, so blame him

Unless I missed a post where you provided hard evidence I'm yet to see you demonstrate anything other than your wishful thinking. Again, my analogy provides an example whereby one shouldn't expect a brand new experience out of an ex display piece especially when one got it at a discount. As demonstrated by that particular AD they didn't think it was reasonable either which is fair enough, it's their business to run their business.

Do we expect shoes to be binned if they're tried on and not subsequently sold?

Of course, since they are disposable goods (good tip for all you shoe buyers out there - don't buy unless the seal is intact, if it isn't buy only if they pay you).

You have a point by if they were a 35k pair of shoes it's not unreasonable to expect them to be untouched.
