    Films that have aged well?

I just saw a clip of Trading Places posted somewhere. It was a really good 70 seconds. I remember realllly enjoying Trading Places when I was a kid, and so now I'm thinking: "I should watch that again".

But I'm also thinking, "you can't go back: the stuff you liked twenty years ago, its never so good when you dig it up" Off the top of my head the worst example I can think of is Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I got some pleasure out of Some Kind Of Wonderful, but it was scarcely the film I remember.

But Trading Places, that was a classic, right? That's still going to make me genuinely happy, surely?

Lets set the parameters between 25 and 40 years old. What films from 1976-1991, that I've a decent chance of having seen on the telly in the 80s and early 90s, have still got it? I bet Ghostbusters has still got it. Has it? Please say it has.

edit: Giving one film and explaining why its still good is a more fun answer than a bare list of six :)

Yes I think some of not all of the special f/X have held up well in ghostbusters . The acting doesn't even need to be questioned . The stay puff still looks great to me and the spectres also . The only thing I can recall looking a tad rubbery is the vince clawthorpe dog /beast Lewis thing with red eyes ; the gate keeper animal form . Only a tad though

I've seen Ferris Bueller's day off a couple of times recently and enjoyed watching to be honest!

The Blues Brothers - used to be one of my favourite films and saw it again recently - still enjoyable - particularly them singing "stand by your man". The car chase looks a bit tame now though!

This was one I really didn't expect! I'm not sure I even bothered watching at the time.

My vote is for "The Fabulous Baker Boys" which, with few exceptions, looks like it could have been filmed yesterday. Even the Grusin soundtrack sounds contemporary 80s pastiche. Without doubt one of my favourite - if not favourite - film.

I'm feeling very sceptical about this one. Reeeeally?! I don't even remember thinking it was much good when I was a kid. You'll be telling me the Cannonball Run is still worth it next....

I think Alien and Aliens have aged really well, still look great...

Technically, it looks way better, as the "Final Cut" is far superior to the original theatrical release. Amazing movie, one of the best ever.

For me it has to be the first two Mad Max movies. I love the third as well, but the first two are unquestionable classics, even better today than when I was a kid. Practical stunts and effects mean they look as good as they ever have.

I also must mention Conan the Barbarian. I loved it as a kid, but I love it even more now. One of the best soundtracks ever.

    "GET TO THE CHOPPAAAAA!!!"

The original is so much better than any of the rest of the Predator movies that have come after it...

All the Indiana Jones films have aged well, perhaps because they were set in the 1940's

I watches them all recently and noticed the one I liked the most at the time was the one that engaged me the least this time.

The Goonies is as good today as it was in the 80s. Timeless romp with a decent splash of humour and adventure. Not my favourite film but definitely one of those that you come across and end up watching all of.
In a similar vein, See No Evil, Hear No Evil is still a riot.

Another vote for Alien and Aliens. Both look like they could be recent releases. I think the early Rocky movies are still pretty good to watch.

Well said that man! Sheriff Buford T. Justice. What we're dealing with here is a complete lack of respect for the law!
As a kid I thought Burt Reynolds was the star, but now ,I know that film is all about Jackie Gleason, with a brilliant supporting role by Jerry Reed. Ooh and the dog, Flash.
    Obviously the trans Am too.
Plus it doesnt stop there, Smokey and the Bandit 2 is just as good! In fact, its the same, but with an elephant. Smokey and the Bandit 3? hmmm...cant really remember but probably also brilliant.

Robocop must stand up pretty well.

I did watch Trading Places and like Beverly Hills Cop it stands up pretty well and of course the Jaime Lee Curtis scenes hold up very well.

Alien I would agree with. Its lost nothing over time.
Aliens I think is now heavily dated , very dull direction and dialogue.

Yes I'd have to agree if anything its improved with time. Epic score , superb photography and a level of sword play and violence that is impressive even by today's standards. A fairly philosophical story that echoes Millius's right wing hippy culture being the antithesis of freedom stance.

These are the ten so far which I enjoyed at the time and which I haven't seen for a while

    Ghostbusters
    Platoon
    Rita Sue and Bob Too
    Robocop
    The Blues Brothers
    The Fabulous Baker Boys
    The Goonies
    The Long Good Friday
    The Princess Bride
    Trading Places

Oh, and I haven't seen The Empire Strikes Back since its original cinema reason....

A couple of years ago I watched Dangerous Liaisons: that was still excellent

I really like the Dirty Harry films and certainly think they stand up today although only the last three come into the requested time frame:

    The Enforcer

    Sudden Impact

    The Dead Pool.
    Cheers,
