I have just invested in a pair of Loake Chesters and would appreciate your advice on what sort of polish I should use.
Is cream or wax polish better or should I use one and then the other?
Regards
Mick

An odd investment.
I've always preferred wax.
Use the colour cream polish first from Saphire. Let it dry and then apply some wax polish to give your shoes a nice shiny finish. From my personal experience, if you buy a decent shoe brush, just give your shoes a decent buff after wearing and you will not need to polish them that often.
Salmon brushes are good, you can buy them here:

I've always been a fan of Parade Gloss polish. I don't think you can get a better shine if you know how to do it. Whatever you go for buy the same colour as your shoes as you may find the creases start to turn a lighter shade as you wear them.
Saphir polish
Dont polish them too often
Saphir or Woly shoe creme. don't use the kiwi polish as it doesn't let the leather breathe. i find with the shoe creme you don't have to polish as often. use a bristle brush to clean the leather before applying the creme with a soft cloth, then buff with another bristle brush(not the same one for cleaning) then a final shine with a soft cloth.
Alternately feeding the leather (creme) and waxing is the way to go. Neutral creme can be used on any colour shoe.
Saphir polish is great, you only need a tiny bit on a cloth. It's a little bit more expensive than kiwi but lasts forever
Another Saphir user here, usually the coloured cream followed by the wax to produce excellent results.
I've used the Saphir shop already mentioned in a previous post and these people without issue http://www.afinepairofshoes.co.uk/co...phir-price-asc
What do you think of renapur as a conditioner?
Dr Martens polish is perfect to me

Many thanks for the advice.

Works great on my bike leathers, never tried it on my shoes or boots though. What do you think of renapur as a conditioner?
From what I understand you should start with this to condition www.saphirmedailledorshop.co.uk/renovateur.html (this is the most important step as it feeds the leather). Then Polish cream. Then wax.
I use shoe snob coloured wax polish and mink cream for mine and they do a fine job. Good tips on the blog as well.
I use the neutral cream
Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd ressurect this one.
As I understand it there's three different substances to use on leather shoes;
1. Conditioner (to keep it soft and supple)
2. Cream (to bring back the colour)
3. Wax (to seal and provide a high shine)
The question I have is, does anyone just use conditioner and cream and not use wax?
Also having black and brown shoes, should I use coloured cream for each different colour i.e. black & brown or just use neutral on all of them?

I’ve got a load of the Loake polish...seems pretty good to me!
I use black and brown Kiwi parade gloss as I only bull my shoes, still.
+1 for Kiwi Parade Gloss.
Never used anything else on my Loakes and can’t imagine that I ever will.
I use Loakes bees wax, which I like, and this year I tried softening up some Barbour's thornproof and waterproof dressing and applying it to a pair of boots. They look OK and haven't fallen apart yet.
Still R.M. Williams saddle dressing.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
Use cream first, then wax polish. Use cloths throughout, do not use brushes for the best finish.
There seems to be no answer!!! Everyone seems to have their own system. I use saphir renovat and the saphir colour polish. No idea if it's the best system.
I don't bother with wax or I'll just have to remove it next polish

Agreed, I just can't make head or tail of it.
As I eluded to earlier, there's three stages;
Moisturise, revive and protect but there's a whole host of combinations people do.
I think I'm going to purchase one horsehair bristle brush, some neutral colour polish cream and some neutral polish wax.
Hope that does a decent job!

Here's a good article I used for purchasing my shoe shine kit

Personally I like brown/tan boots, I like patina and therefore I like Grangers Wax. On a practical level it’ll weatherproof and keep some character. I’m not one for prissy good looks and grooming.

I mostly just use Saphir Renovateur, which is a neutral cleaner and conditioner. I also have a couple of Saphir Pomadeur Creams in different colours depending on shoe colour. These basically do the same job as the Renovateur, except that they are coloured. I only use the coloured cream occasionally when I feel a bit of colour restoration is needed, as I find that overly frequent use (of the coloured cream) begins to make the leather look flat and ‘saturated’.
I have wax too but rarely use it as, although it provides the highest shine and offers the best protection from rain etc, unless removed each time prior to conditioner application it prevents the conditioner from getting through to the leather. If you want to keep your shoes in top shape, I don’t think that just using wax will do the job as the leather won’t get adequately fed. I guess the ideal would be conditioner and then wax each time, followed by wax removal, conditioner application and then wax reapplication the next time, but that’s too much work for me.
No idea if I’m following the right process, but it seems to work. Also, I find horse hair brushes excellent for bringing up a shine once I’ve finished buffing and removing any excess with a cloth.
I've bought saphir creme polish in brown and one in black. I've also bought two large bristle brushes - one for each colour.
And also bought kiwi wax polish in neutral colour in case the shine for the cream polishes isn't enough.
We'll see how it get on
