    Scratchings .
Used to be able to get them with gravy and they were both free !

  26. #26
We called them 'batter-bits' when I was growing up in the 70s in Northampton. I used to shake my head when my mates asked for some to be mixed with gravy and spooned over their chips but then the 70s seemed to be the era of high calorie food, a prime example being spam fritters.

"Batter on top?" was the shout in the NE chippies (Sunderland), "scraps" being seen as a southern saying (well, south of Middlesbrough anyway)

    Batter in the north east.
Although being from Glasgow "the heart attack capital of Europe" even I was stunned when offered these in Newcastle. It's the stuff we put in the bin back home!!

I actually had a spam fritter a while back.

It was nowhere near as nice as I remembered it from my childhood.

In fact it was pretty disgusting if I'm honest.

I mean, what even is spam?

(Probably best you don't answer that...)

    Oh, and it's scraps.

They should now be called Morbid obesity and heart attack.

Scraps (when I was a lad) 5p of chips and scraps after scouts (1973).

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.

Feck me, it's like watching Kes in here!

Must admit, I have never seen nor heard of a chipper/chippy up here giving such delights either as a freebie or otherwise, then again we have our houseboy Raoul go fetch so I wouldn't really know
