    Anyone into Magnet Fishing?

Just been watching some amazing videos of guys in the UK and US magnet fishing, with one guy finding two guns.

Anyone given it a try? Find anything of interest?

Its not being done here as far as I know, so some real chances of finding something maybe related to history, or lost items on the lakes here.

Obviously can't do this in winter, the lakes are frozen, but we have a small boat, so think I will give it ago in the summer time :)

Never heard of it either but Googled it and people seem to have found bikes etc.

    How strong are these magnets?

Played it as a kid but very boring game. Not tried it for real, reel, sorry pun on fishing. Sounds interesting in my neck of the woods I would expect old bikes, shopping trolley and the odd old any old iron. What would be interesting would be an inexpensive water metal detector with little digging tools. Don't have one but just a thought. Good luck, sounds fun. Cheers.

What happens if you throw it out and it hits an old sunk car? Now chance of dragging that back, do you just cut the rope and buy a new magnet?

Thats giving me a dead link.

Interesting 'pastime' though, the rivers local to me will definitely just be shopping trolleys and stolen rubbish bikes unfortunately

    It's not a mkII Cortina that's for sure, I don't think it's a mk3 either.

My dad tried it about 30 years ago. It only lasted about 10 minutes before the magnet got stuck under a rock or similar on the bottom of the sea and we had to cut the rope.
That was the end of that.

The problem with it as a concept (to me) is that you need objects to be ferrous for the magnet to pick them up. Ferrous items tend to corrode badly in water. So (apart from maybe some modern 2p coins) what are you likely to haul up out of the water that you would actually want once hauled up?

I have all the rusty bicycles that I want thanks.

I would go Mk 3 but upper end spec with more trim on back etc,

Not easy to identify that car. And was there a body? Very suspicious that. Guess the Sweeny never found that one...
