Pretty shocked TBH, way way too young.

Recall being on a training course in 1995 when the world cup was on and the instructor spoke about him in a lesson, describing him as a force of nature.

Funny how some moments stick in your mind.

    RIP.

Really sad day. I've never seen a player like him.
It's just a matter of time...

Gutted - legend of the game. I remember watching that match in 95 when he destroyed us. A brave brave fight with a debilitating disease.

Can't remember who said it but it stuck with me "Seeing what this man went through with nephrotic syndrome for most of his All Black career made me wonder how he was even able to get out of bed in the morning, let alone train for and play rugby"

I was really surprised and saddened to read this...
He was a great player and, from the account of someone who worked with him I know very well, a really decent chap.
    Far, far too young.

He seemed so healthy a few weeks ago in London during the world cup.
A loss to the sport of rugby and an inspiration to many young rugby players.

    RIP Jonah

    Such sad news.
He was the first rugby superstar. (And possibly only)
He burst on the scene as I started to play rugby as a kid, he was a major inspiration for players of my generation, He completely changed the game. I also think he helped turn the game professional with the advertising revenue he brought in (remember the Pizza Hut add)

Its a sad day for the sport
    RIP

Very sad news, I just started playing rugby in 95 and when I saw him play its was one of those "whoa" moments.
Always came across as a really nice guy as well.

Really sorry to wake up to this news. A legend in the game and an all round good guy too. Will be sadly missed.

First memory of him was at the South African World Cup. I was living in Jo'burg at the time and I recall how worried and agitated the Springboks were about him. With so much at stake for the host nation he was giving them much cause for concern. He completely destroyed the England squad during that tournament. Amazing player both in power, speed, mobility and strategy. A rugby legend who will be sadly missed, having died way before his time. Very sad indeed!

Sadly he's had massive illness issues since retiring from rugby.

Still the death as come as a massive shock to all as only 4 weeks ago he was in the UK enjoying the world cup.

An absolute gentleman who I have the pleasure of meeting a few years ago.

  21. #21
    Awful news.

Saw him play in Cardiff, Murrayfield, Otago and at my local club Wrexham (just months after the 95 world cup when he was a huge star)

Never less than devastating on a rugby pitch.

    RIP

What a Legend! Fond memories of him running over England backs, shame that food poisoning stopped him winning a world cup.

Also loved playing Jonah Lomu rugby, the only decent computer game of rugby ever made.

    RIP Big man!

Echo that, remember watching that game against us and it was shocking how he just smashed through us. No more beer drinking and just turn up and play. Really changed the game for union, league has always been different.

This is my favourite Lomu moment - everyone that knew him said he was a delightful guy off the pitch, and that's the mark of a great man in my book. Amazing player, better bloke. Gutted for his friends and family - he's my age with young kids too.

I can't think of anyone else. Sure, there are plenty of technically "better" players, McCaw, O'Driscoll, but he was the only worldwide name known by people who didn't know rugby, one of the few sportsmen who was bigger (metaphorically and literally it seems) than his chosen sport.

Shocked and saddened, and I'm not one to get emotional about the deaths of famous people. Probably the last time was 10 years ago when George Best died!

    RIP it up big guy.

For once we all seem to be in agreement. A wonderful sportsman, a legend and a family man tragically taken well before his time.

Not a rugby fan at all, never have been but Jonah is the name I'd come up with if asked to name a famous rugby player.
    Absolutely tragic loss. RIP Jonah...

A true champion; skilled, nimble, fast, and so strong on the ball.

On top of that, an absolute gentleman.

Allegedly before the England game in 1995 a fax was sent to the All Blacks team

"Remember that rugby is a team game; all 14 of you make sure you pass the ball to Jonah."

Have a look for the Baa Baa's game against Scotland in 2001 (I think) and you'll see why!!!

    In fact here it is

Has there ever been a more fitting, emotional, dare I say better, sendoff? It's up there with Winston Churchill.

    Awesome player, awesome man.

Coped admirably with his illness, never losing hope even when the transplant was rejected.

I'm a huge league fan, rather than Union but it's a well-held theory that he would have tore it up in league if his proposed shift over had ever come off!!!
