Tissot Visodate and change.
Hi chaps
I am still on the hunt for a desk diver'esque watch - the speedy is looking like the likely candidate.
But I will also want a "dress" watch.
Looking at c.£500 - and being new to this, looking for any hints and tips.
Requirements:
- Leather strap (black)
- clean dial face
- non Quartz
What i have seen so far that I like, although not sure if they are "dress" watches in the truest sense:
- Hamilton Intra-matic
- Vintage Seamasters.
Any other thoughts are very welcome. Many thanks chaps

Tissot Visodate and change.
PRS-36 fit the bill? (apart from not being auto, doh!)
Seiko Cocktail Time (SARB065), Tissot Visodate or Hamilton Intramatic.
I tried the Tissot and wasn't impressed so I went for the Seiko.

All great suggestions so far - I would add the Junghans Max Bill to the list (although it would have to be second hand to meet that budget if you want the auto version).
I think it also depends how large a dress watch you are comfortable with ... There isn't much that I'm aware of in the 34 - 36 mm range which would be my preference for a dress watch.
At that price you could pick up a new Hamilton Intra-matic.
The silver dialled 38mm version would be my choice. Not many watches in that price range with an ETA 2892.
Pretty much all my suggestions are already in. My favourite is the Visodate though, but I am bias as I chose one as a present for my brother in law and admired it a great deal before wrapping it up.
No shortage of suggestions though. See as many as you can!
Hamilton Jazzmaster Slim automatic, reference H38515555. Easily had for £450.
Here's their website: https://relojesexclusivos.com/en/wat...ands/junghans/
And this was the thread here that gave me the necessary encouragement to use them http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.ph...jes-Exclusivos
Many Seiko SARB models (with some change left) or even a Brightz perhaps....?
If you fancy something vintage and very favourable in quality:price ratio what about an Omega F300 tuning fork model? OK, it's not automatic, but very definitely not quartz either. A Google image search will throw up some very typically 1970s horrors, design-wise, but also some rather elegant and very good quality dress watches, many of which would fall within your £500 budget.
Are you sure?
I find that a true occasional wear dress watch needs to be handwind for simple convenience. A date is just a pain because there is a slightly less than1 in 31 chance it will be right and all that automatic winding gear is going to make thickness an issue.
My finger has been hovering over this Seiko HEQ for a few months. Its certainly a left field choice but with superquartz accuracy and a case so thin it make you marvel that there is a movement in there at all, it has all the horological credentials you could ask for. It even has a proper croc strap.
I love my Seiko Cocktail time. A little tall for some but the dial is so stunning. I didn't want a boring dress watch and this keeps amazing me.

Under £500 the Tissot Le Locle is THE dresswatch reference to me...
Quite simple...an Erroyl E30.
I bought one and it's beautiful, very well made and you'd have lots of change. You could even have 2 for £500!

Here's a nice review:

I have a friend who has the Orient Bambino. Do-able new for around £100, and the equal of watches costing three to four times that.
If you're open to vintage (I assume you are based on the mention of vintage Seamasters), these Girard Perregaux Damiers come up occasionally for around £250. I found mine at a vintage watch shop in New Orleans for a little more than that and I think I over paid based on what I've seen since.
Seiko SARB033 for half your £500 and pocket the other half?
My vote is for the PRS-36.
As much as I like the look of the Bambino, it feels really flimsy and the strap is awful. A fair few have issues with the date wheel lining up properly too - that seems to be an issue on most cheap Orients. I got one from Massdrop cheap, but sold it immediately.
The Steinhart Marine Automatic may be worth a look. 38mm case, €430. http://www.steinhartwatches.de/en/MARINE-38,583.html

I've a Nomos Ludwig. Perfect in my eyes. There's one in SC at present... £795 (so a bit over budget). The quality of these is superb for the price.
Yeah, I just went looking - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Tissot-T006-...issot+le+locle
Slightly over but I'm sure a bit of hunting would get you one in budget.
What this thread has taught me is that aside from looking at the Seamaster and Speedmaster, that in fact for little money, you can get some nice Auto / manual Wind watches.
Thanks for the advice; currently looking at :
Hamilton Khaki King Automatic H64455533 = £236
Orient Bambino Classic Automatic ER2400KA = £81
JUNGHANS MAX BILL MANUAL = £345
STEINHART "MARINE 38" = £310
Issue at the moment is that I can't decide which to order, might be all of them at this rate!
I know I mention it at every opportunity, probably because I really want one myself, but it'd be remiss of me not to point out this:

Like a poor man's aqua-terra.
I bought myself an Erroyl Royal 300 a few weeks back, simply superb watch for the money. Beautiful jubilee strap and a sublime blue dial
Hope as a brand they do more

I wasn't sold on the Roman numerals either to be honest, but after living with it for a while I have to say it looks really nice. No issues at all with the alignment on mine, astounding value really - although did get hit for customs. Very comfortable watch, will post some pics up when I have a chance.
Someone mentioned Nomos. The Club on SC at the moment (only a little more than your budget) is fantastic value for money. I'm astonished it hasn't sold yet.
Gents
Via another forum post, some of the vintage Seamasters have caught my eye.
The 120, the 600 etc.
I know very little about them.. any tips;
- should I get it serviced straight away?
- how much would a service cost?
- are there some models better than others?
- are there specific ebay sellers who are known to be good / bad?
Thanks!
Have a look at the Glycine classic range, good looking dress watches and within budget-

Unfortunately, you won't get a 120 diver for that amount but should be able to find something like this 166.0010:
Or a 166.0002 in gold plate:
Both go well with a Beads of Rice bracelet but that will add another £150.
These and a lot of Omegas from the 60s use the 56x calibres (561 to 565) and all are robust autos. I'd service it straight away and the cost is likely to be £150.
Cheers, Chris
