That's quite something. Hopefully will serve as a fitting tribute rather than an attraction for gawping visitors. Thanks for the photo and hope it goes well tomorrow.
Thought id share this in here as there was quite a lot of interest last year with the Poppies in London. As some of you are aware our town saw quite a few repatriations of servicemen and women over the past few years, in 2012 we were given the Royal status and now a leading sculptor has given this to the town.
It was due to be opened tomorrow by Princess Anne but due to the weight (think almost 4.5 tonnes) they had to change the material of the base which has now put it back a month or so. It went in place this afternoon and I caught a glimpse of it this evening whilst walking the dogs. It's only hundred yards from my door so hopefully will catch some of the ceremony.
Anyway, here it is....quite a site as you come up the High Street

Is that what it is! I've been wondering every time I've been past over the last couple of weeks.
Thanks for sharing, and if you'll manage to catch a glimpse of the ceremony tomorrow, please post more pics.
'tis a lovely tribute and nice to see.
Thank you FFF!
What a beautiful sculpture and memorial - I wonder if they'll add some colour to it?
I hope the local youth have more respect than ours up here.

Yeh theres going to be a backlight to it which will be red so should look quite something when done.
We don't have a huge issue with graffiti etc in the town but it did cross my mind yes however, I thought that surely they wouldn't do something like that.....would they?
It is lovely, I was just expecting to see something red, that's all.
All the barriers now removed and free to walk around it, got to say it's even more spectacular up close.
Thanks for photos FFF. I'll try to pop over when I'm around.
That's outstanding and I'll definitely be paying a visit when I'm next passing. I do hope that it isn't vandalised.
Absolutely stunning and a fitting tribute
The rear of the piece looks a bit like a fallen pawn; there's something fitting in that, intentional or not.
I really like how it turn out, simple yet dignified.
Sadly at 4:47 this morning (caught on CCTV but cant copy it) the poppy suffered a huge structual failure and collapsed.
They thought at first it was a simple case vandalism as tbh it was always on the cards but it looks like a design fault was the issue.
If it opens heres the FB link....looks like its talking as it collapses

That's a shame. I hope they'll reinstate it.
