    Rugby World Cup

I'm pretty sure we're going to need a thread on this.

Still watching the first half Eng-Fij and a lot of skill to appreciate. And good refereeing (so far) too.

18-5 at the moment...who knows how it will go?

  2. #2
Enjoying it too, got a very poorly pooch at my side and the game is giving some much-welcomed respite.

18-8, a lot to play for.

Supporting the underdog here: Fiji. What an athletes on both sides! Soccer can learn a lot from this! Including video refs, camera on the ref's chest etc. And what my son says: "Oh those rugby players RUN off the field when it's half time. Soccer players look sad when they plod off the field..."

I'm surprised it has taken this long for a thread on it! I'm enjoying the England game so far, Fiji haven't come just to make up the numbers. The opening ceremony was excellent as well.

    Come on Ireland!

A bit of a luck luster opening ceremony. But I'm enjoying the match, especially now that Fiji has woken up.

I'm really looking forward to the matches I have tickets for.

Even enjoyed the half-time debate...all about the game and how to improve it! My respect for Jonny Wilkinson and Clive Woodward has just gone up...unsurprisingly they know what they're talking about.

Interesting comments about Fijis disallowed try after the replay on the big screen. Think Clive Woodward had it absolutely spot on when he said once the ref gives it, the try should stand. As they were saying how far back can they go to change a decision - half time, full time etc.
quite enjoying the game. england deservedly in the lead but maybe not worth the margin yet. Think they will move ahead in the second half though.

Guys, a question: we (my son Maurice and I) are watching the game and he noticed that some players (both sides) have patches under their jerseys. Some have them in front like a heartbeat monitor and there are patches on the back between the shoulder blades. Can you tell us what they are?

Crikey, that was a tough one. I think that the final score flattered England, and we still seem to lose turnovers and give away penalties.

However, a win with a precious bonus point in a tough group. Wales and Australia will be concerned about facing Fiji after that display.

Brad Barritt had a shocker, but England's backs all played well, especially Mike Brown. And the subs all made a difference in the last quarter of the match. We still need to make sure that we beat Wales, who are missing some key players.

There are some tasty looking games tomorrow as well.

  18. #18
Hope Mike Brown doesn't get injured, and Slammin Sam gave a very impressive cameo - looking like a shrewd pick now. That bonus point could be vital, because I think Australia are going to be really strong....

looking forward to NZ v Argentina tomorrow.

Really great evening, the atmosphere before the game was incredible. A nervous start to the tournament from England though. Full credit to Fiji they played some great rugby and the score line flattered us.

    England

Credit to Fiji I was impressed and despite a flattering score line couldn't ask for much more than a win and bonus points, I've got tickets for wakes next weekend and really looking forward to it

Got the 5 points we really needed but will have to up our game against the Welsh and Wallabies. Back 3 were really good. Problems in centre. Over for the Wales game next week. Need to win the group as I have tickets for quarter, semi and final.

I think this programme is worth listening to...BBC Newshour Extra Dangerous Games. These links start some way into the programme rather than at the start:

Give it time to reach the conclusion...it's not really anti-rugby, but poses the question of how best to improve the players' safety. And it may not be comfortable listening for us, the fans of contact sports.

The ITV coverage wasn't great. The director wasn't up to snuff.

Mullins & Dallaglio on commentary; both dreadful.

The problem was the ref nor the linesman actually saw it, hence should never have given it in the first place. He should have automatically referred it to the TMO.

Shame really because it was a great try (almost).

I thought Wilko and Woodwood were excellent as was Bayfield.

Not sure urge who the pundit is on the Ireland/Canada is, but truly shocking (the most boring so far).

    roll on Italy vs France.

Today I read the match reports, and player scores, and wonder what I have missed. Tom Youngs is picked as hooker, never hooked a ball, fluffed a couple of throw ins and gets really good marks for his efforts round the field. The back row players get high scores, yet we are turned over 10 times - Wales will win every battle on the floor. Still, I am off to see NZ v Argentina tomorrow. Really looking forward to that one.

    Amazing!

What a great game, I am thrilled to bits for the Japan fans! Great, gutsy performance all the way through, then
to hold their nerve at the end and push for the win was incredible!

Anyone noticed how good the pitches have been. I watched England vs France in Paris a couple of weeks ago and the pitch was shocking.

Twickers has the opening Match and now France/Italy and there is hardly a mark. Even around the scrums.

    All respect to the Groundsman.

The 2003 Final, with a certain drop goal from Mr Wilkinson in the last couple of minutes. It will never get better than that.

Good question...but please don't take this thread the way of so many others..pretty please?

He's already posted five times in the thread. Please don't be the first to bite and start a squabble.

Japanese was such a thrilling end - so brave not to kick the three points for a draw. Adventure led to the glory in the end, and shows why sport can be so great.
