    Finger joint pain

Just wondering if anyone has suffered from this?
Started about a month ago, not aware of doing anything in particular that may have caused this.
Very painful at times, and have woken up during the night due to the pain.
Have put some deep heat on this evening to see if it helps.
    Mrs, just adores the smell....not.
Starting to affect my golf as well.

Not affected my thumbs yet. They seem to be ok.

All other fingers on both hands are affected, especially when I bend them.

    Arthritis? Hope not.

What kind of daily use do your hands get? The more specifics, the more accurate an idea you can expect to get. Right now it's anything from RSI to cancer.

As always with medical, see a doctor. Don't rely on the Internet for a diagnosis when it comes to your own personal health.

If the pain is waking you up, you need to talk to your doctor. Don't mess with your health talk to the doctor. I get joint pain frequently (alaranltly spending years playing rugby wasn't a good idea). I find glucosamine and cod liver oil helps, but really see a doctor and make sure it's nothing a prescription wouldn't help with

RSI may be a distinct possibility?

Computer engineer, so lots of keyboard work on a daily basis.

Playing golf may just be adding to the problem?

The problem is that the pain is a symptom of a bigger issue, whatever it is will need treatment either via physical therapy, or a change of habit. I'm afraid only a medical professional who can physically assess you can tell you how to do this.

I had a similar thing in my 20's, started taking cod liver oil each morning and it disappeared. That was 20 years ago and no longer take the oil so no idea, but I'd see a doctor if it is keeping you awake

I get something very similar in my left thumb/wrist area - extremely painful at times. Added complication in that I broke that wrist and some other bones in there 20 odd years ago and had to have them pinned. Recently went to the doctors about a particularly painful flair-up, first thing they talked about was the possibility of gout.

Could be gout. I don't how old you are but don't rule it out because you think it's an old man's problem. Friend of mine at work is in his late 20's and he gets it in his fingers and toes.

Go to see your friendly GP (I work as one). There are loads of different things that could be going on, very difficult to make any comment without a decent history, examination and possibly a few blood tests as well. Might be worthwhile taking an anti-inflammatory (Ibuprofen or the like- as long as you can tolerate it) for a week or so as response to this can be quite useful in working out what is going on.

    Update:

    Visited my GP as advised.

Blood tests were all fine, nothing untoward.

GP then arranged X-rays at local hospital.

Went back to my GP yesterday for results.

    Osteo Arthritis in both hands.

    Ibuprofen prescribed for pain management.

Not good for a golfer I suppose, but just have to deal with it.

I have exactly the same (I'm 49) and a few months of taking glucosamine has improved it 90+%. I would take chondroitin as well but there are no vegetarian sources.

(You certainly don't want to be taking Ibuprofen on a regular basis for the rest of your life).

    Thanks.

I will get some glucosamine and chondroitin, to see if they help.

Yeh, do not want to be taking Ibuprofen for any length of time, but necessary at the moment.

Be *very* careful with Ibruprofen medium to long term. I've got similar issues with hands, and have found that putting up with the pain (which has in any case diminished as I've gradually learnt how not to annoy them) is much better for me than the side effects of Ibruprofen

Hello mate, I've just been diagnosed with psoriasic arthritis in a few joints. The rheumatologist wants to put me on some kind of long term medicine, pending blood test results, which I'm fine with, but in the meantime I'm gobbling Ibuprofen by the dozen which is a self presescribed treatment. I hope I won't kill myself by doing that before the next gtg!

Co-incidentally of to the Dr today to review my xrays but pretty clear to me it's osteoartritis. I have started taking glucosamine but it has not been long enough to see if there are going to be any benefits - need to give it at least 6-8 weeks.
I was taking 600mg ibruprofen every morning to help the symptoms but that was putting my blood pressure up so have had to stop .
See what Doc has to say later.

By they way linking in to the BP thread about GP surgeries - I called for an appointment at 8.30 and am being seen at 11am . She is a great Doc, British with UK training - I'm just not keen on the hug at the end of the appointment but it is compulsory !

Double Check its not immune system related, change in diet and alternative anti-inflammatories possible
also check your thyroid / adrenal function (with a doctor who knows what tests to run not just GP who runs one or two checks - when my thyroid goes underactive I get joint aches/stiffness all over that can last for months.

    see this page www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/inflammation

    second opionions worth the effort

Is that the recommended dose on the package? It does seem higher than the usual 200 - 400 mg.

However, I am not a doctor or a pharmacist. I hope your doctor helps you to get sorted out.

Personally I only use ibuprofen when I really need it (back pain) and my body usually lets me know within a day or two that it doesn’t like it (cracked lips, rear end troubles... I suspect it just wrecks my GI tract from one end to the other).

600mg is a higher end dose but stopped that now.

Dr confirmed osteoarthritis in hands and neck combined with generalized degeneration of Thoracic and Lumber spine exacerbated by trauma some years ago.
Going down the glucosamine, yoga and osteopath route for now but epidural steroids were mentioned for the future.

Ibuprofen is a bit of a 'clumsy' medication and it is not without potential consequences (like most drugs).

Chatting with my GP she thought Glucosamine could help in the finger joints but not the neck .
I am taking 1500mg every morning but expect it to take a while.
I decided to buy 300 of the 500mg capsules and review once I had taken all those (100 days)

This week I have been trying an anti-inflamatory juice.

Fresh Turmeric root, Beetroot, Lemon, Corriander, Ginger. I made a batch on Sunday and have been having a small glass twice a day.
It's pretty hardcore juice and after a few days I added some water as it seemed to get stronger. Don't know if it has done anything to the arthritis but certainly keeps me regular !

My juicer will forever be yellow now as cant get the turmeric colour off the plastic.

I remember a patient who was on Apple Cider Vinegar and molasses - not sure if it helped her arthritis but it wrecked her teeth

Yep Gout is a real bummer :(
I don't drink much, eat offal or fish and not particularly overweight - but I did suffer from crystalline uric acid kidney stones when I was younger then a 1.5 years ago (aged 50) - got my first gout attack.
At first I thought I must have stubbed my toe. Then it felt like it's on fire as it is after all a form of arthritis I just tooks a combination of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol - Now take Allopurinol and no attacks for a year :)

I've been on Allopurinol for 18 years; gout in my ankle. No attacks since but on the rare occasion I forget my ankle can niggle and annoy.

Just before Christmas I developed a bit of an RSI in my right index finger. Initially thought i'd fractured my finger but when I worked out the likely cause it made me realise it was probably an RSI. I was in a lot of pain too. Have you tried splinting your finger against an adjacent one?

Cherry Active Juice is also good for Gout, helps you sleep too.

Glucosamine update - I have continued taking 1500mg daily and have finished 3 out of the 4 bottle I bought - significantly less finger joint pain so have ordered the next 4 bottles. Luckily my professional supplier will sell me all sorts of drugs so a bottle of 60x500mg only costs me $5. (Special K anyone - and I don't mean cereal)

I have continued with the turmeric juice too but mainly because I like the taste. I make about 1L per week and by the end of the week dilute it a bit as the "earthy" taste gets stronger.

How are you other finger pain sufferers doing?

randomly i have a pain in my right hand middle finger, and its not from giving people "the bird"

I've had it weeks and it feels like i need to crack my finger joints but I've tried to do that and there is no give and tbh its painful when I try to do it. I thought the pain would go away and sort itself out but its been at least a few weeks now and I'm thinking can I be arsed going to the GP with it?

I usually get joint pain in the in my fingers, but mainly my thumbs the day after a guitar workout.

I was recommended Arnica cream by a muso and have tried it, rubbing it in to the painful area.

    It certainly seemed to work.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

Thanks for the update. I'm continuing with the glucosamine experiment for my arthritic thumb. It's been better lately but I think I've been putting less strain on it so the jury's still out

Try taking this twice a day

    600 mg MSM (Methyl-Sulfonyl-Methane)
    4000 mg MCHC (Microcrystalline Hydroxyapatite)
    1000 mg Cissus Quadrangularis
    500 mg Chondroitin Sulfate
    1000 mg Glucosamine HCl
    400 IU Vitamin D3

You could also try putting rubber bands around your fingers and working the lesser used eccentric movement to counter the probably over-used concentric motion

I've had a pain a few times in my little finger, it hangs around for a week or so then disappears for a while - strangely it was sore to touch(knock) too. Suspect it might be arthritis but hadn't bothered to get it checked out yet (I believe I'm too young-ish so hoping the power of denial will get me through).

Was also going to mention Super Cissus ^^^
Last year I managed to contract tennis elbow and golfers elbow at the same time in both arms (drinking a pint was a challenge!) - not sure if it was the cissus that helped, but it was gone a few weeks later. Think I may be in for plenty of joint trouble in future :(
