I tend to go for a mature variety, that's quite tamed and full flavoured even on its own, younger stuff can benefit from more coke though.

Santa Teresa 1796 Ron Antiguo de Solera is my current favourite tipple, highly recommended, and at US$ 7 in Caracas airport, it would be rude not to.

I'm learning to like rum, well spiced rum anyway. I'd like to be able to drink it just on ice but I'm still not there. My usual tipple is Sailor Jerry or Oakheart with coke. Anyone got a recommendation for any others that could be drunk neat by non alkies. I don't mind spending a bit if it's really that good.

I've tried and tried with whiskey, blends singles, cheap, expensive, but to use the Scots vernacular, they all give me The Boke

Diplo is nice, but El Dorado 15 destroys it IMHO.

Only have Goslings at home for the occasional Dark n Stormy ;-)

Thats the thing with rum, it really depends what you are going to do with it!

Black Seal is good for drinking neat too. The challenge with a Dark n Stormy is getting decent ginger beer here.

Oh for diet Barratts or Goslings!

I find that most Guyanese rums are sensational, the El Dorado mentioned is lovely in all of it's guises (try the 21). As far as Venezuelans go the beautifully smooth and balanced Santa Teresa 1796 (on ice) beats the rather sweet Diplomático hands down for me.

I also have a soft spot for dark Cubans ;-)

Hell of a heads up, nice tipple this and I'm not a huge Rum drinker.

Out of interest, anyone here tried the Black Seal 151? (70-odd strength).
    I'm scared of it!

I have. stick to the usual one unless you are making something like a Hurricane which needs over proof rum.

Isn't Old J similar to how Sailer Jerrys used to taste before they messed it up / changed the recipe?

Could be, it has a very strong vanilla taste (to me anyway). One of the better ones to drink without a mixer.

I also enjoy a rum or three. Like a lot of people struggled to find one that I could drink neat until I was bought a bottle of Ron Aquere Caramilo, which comes in a metal bottle.

It is absolutely superb, like drinking liquid caramel infuzed with a rum taste - pop a few ice cubes in and away you go. You can buy it mail order in the UK, but it sells in the Euro zone for less than €10 euros a bottle.

Just spotted Kraken and Mount Gay Black Barrel on special offer in Waitrose, oh and with all this talk about rum I thought it would be rude not to

Mouthwatering! I've been putting a dash of ginger ale into Mojitos lately as a little twist, works rather well IMO. ¡Salud!

It's absolutely fantastic if you make yourself a Bermuda fish chowder, see if you can import some sherry peppers too!

El Dorado 15 is an amazing rum. Perhaps a little sweet for some but perfect for a night by the fire sipping.
For those who prefer a more traditional alcohol-led rum, Havana Club Maestro is perfect

Currently have the following on my shelf:

    Ron Zacapa 23
    El Dorado 15
    Havana Club Seleccion de Maestro
    Rum Nation Panama 18
    Gold of Mauritius
    Flor de Cana 18
    Pampero Anniversario
    Dictador 20

Ditto to the chaps suggesting Zacapa 23.

Also Angostura 1919 is nice and mellow if drinking neat.

    Current selection:

    Pampero Aniversario
    Captain Bligh XO
    Ron Zacapa 23
    Angostura 1919
    Sailor Jerry
And a bottle of cheap dark Bacardi for guests that don't know better

Probably a bit mainstream for most here, but I favour Woods 100.

Someone, knowing I like Rum, bought me a bottle of spiced rum, foul stuff...

Someone brought a bottle of Captain Morgan to my NYE party once. It was still in my cupboard unused 4 years later so I threw it away

That would have gone in my guest bin, alongside the Beefeater and Smirnoff!

Josh, Fever Tree do a mild ginger beer that is just perfect with Rum

Rum is my alcoholic drink, even though I'm not a big drinker at all.

Which ones are the best just to sip neat when relaxing? (at the moment I'm drinking Appleton)

    My top rums for sipping:

Ron Zacapa 23 - although it's overpriced imo.
El Dorado 12 or 15 - the 12 is sweeter, the 15 less so but with more of treacle flavour. The 15 is better in my view.
Dictador 20 - very smoky, would partner a good cigar perfectly
Diplomatico Reserva Exclusivo - a little less alchohol-led than the normal Reserva
Flor de Cana 18 - Much more traditional rum than the above which all have a sweetness to them. Great to switch to later in the night :)

Just back from a few weeks in Barbados where I was introduced to Mount Gay OX, dunk neat with no ice. Fantastic, sweet rounded and very drinkable.

Brought a couple of bottles back with me pluse a bottle of the XXO, but that's for cold winter nights, sat by the fire and dreaming of the Sun.

Is OVD any good as a neat sipping rum? My experience is limited to sipping Lamb's Navy in the Winter months, so looking for a dark rum to try

Lambs isn't a god sipper although its a perfectly good mixer. Try the Goslings!

The nicest I've had for a while is the Chairmans Reserve Forgotten Casks. Under £30 on Drinks Shop and worth every penny imo.

Woods isn't bad, but a bit strong. There is always a bottle (usually closer to a quarter of a bottle!) at my parents, my old fella gets through that gear like water!

OVD is very sickly in my view. I don't really rate any of the cheap dark rums like Lambs/OVD/Morgan - too much added caramel. Even for cocktails there are far better available for not much more money. The only time I'd use one is making Rum punch for a party.

For cocktails I usually use a golden rum like Appleton, El Dorado 8yr or Havana Club Especial/7/Anejo. For a Mojito there's not much to beat Havana Club 3yr though the El Dorado and Appleton white rums are good too.
