Thread: Double Glazing Problems

    Double Glazing Problems

My uPVC windows are about 4 or 5 years old, installed by a now retired house builder and are causing me grief. The master bedroom and dining room set are wobbly in and have cracked the sealing all around. The dining room one is so bad we have slugs coming in for warmth.

On the same window, the actual window doesn't close in the frame and leaves a big gap at the top. Pushing it as I lock the window doesn't help, it just springs back. I'm worried that it looks like someone tried to force their way in, but there are no marks anywhere so I doubt it.

Also, most of the handles are loose around the house.

I think the bedroom and dining room windows need to be taken out and put back in properly and the others serviced. I called a couple of local double glazing companies, but they were only interested in selling me new ones not helping me solve my current issues.

Are there reputable double glazing repairers out there? I'm in Essex and happy to pay for a top job.

Would be interested in to know too, looking to have good quality timber double glazing cases added to a victorian property in Essex, while retaining the original frames.

Look on check-a-trade, there are people who socialise in DG repairs.

Lots of 'builders' out there who think they can fit windows but can't.

FENSA is the Government registered group, try a search HERE to find a fitter in your area.

I presume some of them will be fitters as oppose to suppliers

If you are looking at changing he glass only whilst retaining the frame have a look at histoglass... If it's a sash window you'll struggle to get a standard double glazed pane in the rebate. Any decent joiner should be able to fit it whilst undertaking any repairs required. It's worth noting that the weights may need adjusting also if it's a sash...

Ive used a similar "Double Glazing Doctor" for repairs.
A quick search brought this guy up:
    http://tonythewindowman.co.uk/

I've not used hm, but he might be worth giving a call.

fensa is a self certification scheme... Any window replacements either need to be undertaken by a fensa approved installer or under a building notice... Tho fensa installers have been known to cock up other parts of the building regulations in regards to means of escape etc...

Your other option is to look for a reputable general builder, the windows sound like they just need wedging and securing, and suitable seals renewing... The handles probably just need tightening...

I used these guys http://www.plasticdoctor.co.uk to fix a PVCU patio door on one of my rentals in Chelmsford. While they didn't manage to fix it first time out their customer service was good and they managed to resolve the issue fairly quickly.
