Following on from a recent thread covering Kanye West's performance at Glastonbury who do you think is really the world's biggest rock star??
I would have to choose from those with a good back catalogue. Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger or Paul McCartney. There are lots of others I could consider... Eric Clapton, Elton John and so on... mostly Brits, it's true, but maybe even one or two of the American rockers... however the execrable Mr. West would be quite a way down the list....
Rob
While he's still with us it's got to be Macca.
And while we're on the subject of Mr West, he's not even the biggest hip-hop artist in the world.
Interesting you should say that...Kanye West did a track called "Four Five Seconds" with Paul Mcartney...Unfortunately the youth of today have no idea who Paul Mcartney is...

Simple - The Boss
Living, it would appear to be Madonna!

Depends how you define "great" (artistically, financially, or the one with the greatest "legend").
For me, none other than Axl Rose.
Depends what criteria that you define a rock star to be.
Most of those mentioned do not play rock in my opinion.......
I would think its Macça as most of the big pop stars hold him in very high esteem
Rock star for sure
Huge
I assume that we are talking about people still alive and performing, yes i know, Jimi Hendrix doesn't do many gigs these days. I can see why people are picking the likes of Macca, Jagger and the Boss, but if David Bowie got off his arse he would still give those guys a run for their money.
I am a life long "Who" fan but just couldn't justify putting Pete or Rog up for this accolade now.
U2 can fill stadia like few others, they must be candidates (and frankly, you can't pick a greatest but you could probably get broad agreement of half a dozen candidates).
Define Rock?
Most mentioned (like Elton, McCartney, Madonna etc) are pop(ular) music folk. None of them has done a rock track by my definition (whatever that is)!!
Jagger is probably top (I'm not a Stones fan) but Freddie Mercury?.......
biggest means what? most influential living has to be little richard.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
As "big", "rock" and "star" are all open to interpretation, I'm going with Nirvana's Krist Novoselic.
He's 6 foot 7.
If you go by touring then this is the most recent list I could find:

Hasn't Mick Jagger been seen in the flesh by more people that anyone else that's ever lived? That's got to count for something.
Mick Fleetwood's pretty big...
For me it's McCartney but for lots of others it's probably Taylor Swift. I wonder if Macca could have made Apple change their artist payment terms?
Meatloaf even bigger...
Lemmy
(proportionately)
Don't ask me how I know.
Was he also wearing extremely small shoes?
Biggest rock star has gotta be Mick Jagger. Paul McCartney may be a bigger star, but I wouldn't call him a rock star.
Tallest Man on Earth, has to be... (New album is really, really good too.)
Anyone who saw the documentary 'Lemmy' would have to give a shout to Mr L Kilmister the embodiment of sex drugs and rock 'n roll and a real cool dude, his conversations with Billy Bob Thornton were hilarious and the Captain Sensible interview had me laughing uncontrollably.
Lemmy said rock 'n roll was invented by Little Richard, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis. Elvis was definitely the King but if we are talking about the living it has to be Little Richard.
Past.. Elvis
Present.. Macca, Jagger, Clapton, and maybe even Rick Wakeman (voted a prog. God). There's a lot of contenders.
Rod
No mention of One Direction? Come on guys!
No one for Elton John.
I believe he likes a bit of rock up his star...
No love for Bowie?
In terms of 'currently relevant', then it's probably Dave Grohl or Matt Bellamy.
I've just been looking at Billboard's 2014 "Rich List".
In the Top 10:
Kenny Chesney (nope, me neither!), Bon Jovi, Maroon Five, Luke Bryan (again, never heard of him!). The Rolling Stones & Fleetwood Mac are there.

Kanye is definitely the biggest SOMETHING in this world, but it ain't rock star!
Kenny Chesney is a country music artist (and a damn fine one at that.)
In these days of streaming it looks like tours are the way artists really warm money for themselves. Yesterday I went to the 98th show off the current Fleetwood Mac tour. They have brought in around $176 million in ticket revenue with merchandise on top. After costs each of the 5 band members must be getting $20 million. Not bad for a years work.
I give you the real master of Rock....
Well okay he doesn't truly stack up against the greats but I am no fan of McCartney, Springsteen or even any of the Stones although their music is decent enough. For me the greatest living is Robert Plant however his musical style has evolved somewhat but in his hayday there was absolutely nobody that could come close. Kanye West is a tool who does not compare to any of the above. It is just another genre that certain styles of artistes are trying to imitate and claim as their own. Think RnB at its inception (masterful Blues legends like Sonny Boy Williamson or Blind Lemon Jefferson) and the dross it is now. There's barely any comparison. Modern stuff is poo and most modern artists are too!
Er, if you say so...
The little girl with no front teeth who was the lead singer on "there's no one quite like grandma".
Steven Tyler
